Description:

The Green Animals Topiary Garden, located in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, is the oldest and most northern topiary garden in the United States. Spanning 7 acres and overlooking the scenic Narragansett Bay, the garden features a remarkable collection of topiaries, including eighty sculptured trees. Managed by The Preservation Society of Newport County, Green Animals offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. We are seeking a dedicated Operations Technician to support the daily operations of this iconic estate, ensuring its beauty, safety, and accessibility for visitors.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform horticultural care including pruning, watering, fertilizing, and pest management to maintain the health and appearance of the garden’s topiaries and plantings
  • Conduct routine site and facilities maintenance, including landscaping, cleaning, and minor repairs to ensure the grounds are well-kept and safe
  • Assist with security functions to safeguard the property, visitors, and staff
  • Support set-up and breakdown for special events and educational programs
  • Monitor and report any safety hazards or maintenance needs to ensure a secure environment
  • Collaborate with team members to uphold the garden’s aesthetic standards and operational efficiency


SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience in horticulture, landscaping, or grounds maintenance preferred
  • Knowledge of plant care, pruning techniques, and pest management
  • Ability to operate basic gardening tools and equipment safely
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Physical ability to perform outdoor work in various weather conditions
  • Excellent communication skills and a team-oriented attitude
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation preferred

Requirements:

REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Groundskeeping, landscaping, or museum security/safety experience preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required.
  • Technology competency and knowledge of cleaning products, equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, follow instructions, prioritize tasks, and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Dependable, detail-oriented, and willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to stand, walk quickly, climb stairs/ladders, bend, stoop, reach, twist, and balance as needed.
  • Must be able to use hand tools, wheelbarrows, power tools, and work on scaffolding without fear of heights.
  • Visual acuity for near and far work, including the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to drive between work locations, if needed, and lift up to 50 lbs.
