Weekend Tesla Electrical Engineer information

What is a Weekend Tesla electrical engineer?

Weekend Tesla Electrical Engineers are professionals who work part-time or on a weekend schedule to support Tesla’s electrical engineering projects. They may assist with designing, testing, maintaining, or troubleshooting electrical systems in Tesla vehicles or energy products. Their responsibilities often include collaborating with full-time engineers, conducting experiments, analyzing data, and ensuring that all work aligns with Tesla’s quality and safety standards. This role is ideal for individuals seeking flexible work arrangements, such as students or those with other weekday commitments. Weekend engineers play a crucial role in helping Tesla maintain productivity and innovation outside of regular business hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Tesla electrical engineer?

To thrive as a Weekend Tesla Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, strong problem-solving skills, and typically a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, circuit simulation tools, and Tesla-specific systems or certifications is often required. Excellent teamwork, strong communication, and adaptability to fast-paced environments help you stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining high engineering standards, ensuring safety, and supporting rapid innovation during critical weekend shifts.

What are some unique challenges and expectations for a Weekend Tesla electrical engineer compared to a standard weekday role?

As a Weekend Tesla Electrical Engineer, you may encounter unique challenges such as tighter project timelines and the need to troubleshoot urgent issues that arise during limited production windows. You’ll often work more independently or with a smaller on-site team, requiring strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions confidently. Collaboration with weekday teams is essential, as you'll need to communicate updates and ensure smooth handoffs. This role is ideal for engineers who excel in fast-paced environments and are comfortable managing critical tasks during off-peak hours.

What is the difference between Weekend Tesla Electrical Engineer vs Weekend Tesla Electrical Technician?

AspectWeekend Tesla Electrical EngineerWeekend Tesla Electrical Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related fieldAssociate's degree or technical certification in electrical systems
Work EnvironmentDesign, testing, and troubleshooting electrical systems, often in office or lab settingsOn-site maintenance, installation, and repair of electrical equipment
Employer & Industry UsagePrimarily in engineering departments, R&D, and project planning within TeslaField service, maintenance teams, and installation crews at Tesla facilities or sites

Weekend Tesla Electrical Engineers focus on designing and testing electrical systems, requiring a degree in engineering. In contrast, Weekend Tesla Electrical Technicians handle hands-on maintenance and repairs, often with technical certifications. Both roles support Tesla's operations but differ in responsibilities, credentials, and work environments.

Job description

At Spaceium, we are building spacecraft systems designed to push the boundaries of what's possible in orbit. As an Electrical Engineer, you will own the design, testing, and integration of the electrical and electronic systems that power and control our spacecraft - from schematic and PCB through harnessing, bring-up, and mission integration, in high-stakes, resource-constrained environments.

Responsibilities
  • Design spacecraft avionics: schematic capture and PCB layout for power, control, and signal boards
  • Design and build wiring harnesses and manage electrical integration across subsystems
  • Bring up, test, and debug electronic boards and subsystems
  • Develop and run electrical tests - power, signal integrity, functional, and environmental
  • Design power systems (batteries, power distribution, regulation) and support EPS architecture
  • Own documentation: schematics, ICDs, test procedures, and reports for design reviews
  • Set up lab instrumentation and test equipment, and support hardware-in-the-loop testing
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, embedded software, and systems engineers
  • Support spacecraft integration, environmental testing, and anomaly resolution
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • Solid foundation in circuit design, analysis, and electronics
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (Altium, KiCad, or similar)
  • Comfort with lab test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, DMMs)
  • Exposure to at least one programming language (Python, C, or C++)
What We're Looking For

We're building technology that hasn't been done before. Experience is helpful, but curiosity, drive, and the ability to learn quickly matter more. If you're excited about spacecraft, enjoy solving hard engineering problems, and want to help build something new, we encourage you to apply - whether you're early in your career or more experienced.

Preferred Skills
  • Creative problem solver with strong first-principles thinking, capable of assessing risk and making decisions with limited data.
  • Experience in a nimble, technical engineering role, with a scrappy, entrepreneurial approach to meeting tight time or budget constraints.
  • Hands-on experience building and testing real electronics - student design teams (rocketry, CubeSat, FSAE), research, or industry
  • Experience bringing up custom PCBs from bare board to working hardware
  • Familiarity with power electronics, motor drive, or spacecraft EPS
  • Experience with microcontrollers, sensors, and embedded integration
  • Familiarity with communication interfaces (RS422, I2C, SPI, CAN, Ethernet)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, collaborative team player, and detail-oriented with a focus on quality.
Additional Requirements
  • Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical project and mission milestones.
  • This role requires a physical presence at the Ottawa facility.
Compensation
  • Salary: $75,000 - $110,000 CAD per year
  • Equity: 0.1% - 0.5%

If you're excited about shaping the future of space systems, we'd love to hear from you.

Please submit any projects that you have worked on.
