GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

WHP is seeking motivated applicants for the position of Trooper II to fill vacancies across Wyoming. The WHP Trooper II enforces the laws of the State of Wyoming through primary contact with the public and has statewide jurisdiction.

WHP candidates must be able to complete the Wyoming Highway Patrol training academy and field training program. The length of these programs varies based on previous experience and/or certifications. Successful Trooper II candidates must be willing to live and work anywhere in Wyoming; assignments are based on the department's needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.
  • Assist with traffic law enforcement, crash investigations, citizen assistance, executive or dignitary protection, safety awareness activities/promotion, and public speaking.
  • Ensure excellent communication skills with the public, peers, chain of command, and internal and external stakeholders in all situations.
  • Anticipate and adapt to continuously changing situations and maintain self-control under stressful situations. This includes working alone while making sound decisions at a moment's notice.
  • Administer first/medical aid.
  • Other duties include court appearances, criminal interdiction, commercial vehicle enforcement, education, and other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications
PREFERENCES/** AGENCY REQUIREMENTS::
**Trooper II applicants must possess an Advanced Peace Officer Certification or higher through the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training Commission (P.O.S.T.) or equivalent from another state as recognized by Wyoming P.O.S.T. that is based on years of service and training hours. Wyoming P.O.S.T. will determine this (See NOTES section for more information on P.O.S.T. certification.).
The above requirements are for Trooper II positions only. P.O.S.T. certification is not a requirement for a Trooper I position. If you do not meet the above requirements, please apply for a Trooper I position.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
WHP APPLICANT TESTING WILL BE HELD ON THE FOLLOWING DATES:
- Class 112: August 24-26, 2026. All requirements must be complete by August 13, 2026 to attend this testing cycle.
- Class 113: March 15-17, 2027. All requirements must be complete by March 5, 2027, to attend this testing cycle.
WHP APPLICANT TESTING:
  • Each applicant must attend WHP testing in Cheyenne, Wyoming, if selected. Failure to attend this testing process will remove the applicant from the hiring process. Failure at any point in the testing process will remove the applicant from further consideration.
    • The applicant is responsible for their own travel, lodging, meals, and transportation during and for the testing process. The WHP will not pay for or reimburse you for the cost of attending testing.
  • One week prior to WHP testing, each applicant must have successfully taken and passed the Public Safety Test (PST) (). To find locations to take the test: .
    • This test will cost you $62. The WHP will not reimburse you for the cost of the test.
    • Failure to take the test one week before WHP testing or failing the PST will preclude the applicant from further consideration in this testing process.

WHP Testing consists of the following:
  • Orientation with WHP Executive Staff
  • Physical Fitness Assessment (WYRAP/Row Machine)
  • If successful with WYRAP, participate in and pass an Oral Interview Board
  • If successful with the Oral Interview Board, participate in and pass a deception test called EyeDetect
  • If successful with EyeDetect, participate in and pass a psychological evaluation.

*We reserve the right to disqualify any applicant from the hiring process at any time, for any reason, throughout the recruitment period.
Background investigation Phase:
  • Once successful with the WHP Test processes, all successful applicants move into background investigations. The background investigation phase is lengthy and very in-depth. Failure to comply with a request from a background investigator, failure to complete the requirement paperwork, or discovery of a disqualifying factor will disqualify the applicant from continuing in the hiring process.
  • If successful in the background investigation phase, each successful applicant will be submitted to the WHP Executive Staff for hiring decisions and duty station assignment

WHP Academy:
  • New hires who do not meet the P.O.S.T. standards for advanced peace officer certification must attend the entire 20-week academy.
  • New hires who qualify for advanced peace officer through P.O.S.T. must attend the 6-week pre-certified officer academy.
  • Both groups start on the same date as part of the WHP Academy.

KNOWLEDGE:
  • Basic research and understanding of the job duties of a Wyoming State Trooper.
  • Understand the challenges of Wyoming weather.
  • Healthy physical fitness and nutrition habits.
  • Comprehension of the Wyoming Highway Patrol testing process.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
High School Diploma /GED/ or equivalent
Experience:
3-5 years of work experience working with the public, which includes 1-2 years as a certified law enforcement officer in Wyoming or equivalent in another state, or as a Trooper with Wyoming Highway Patrol.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Applicant must possess the Advanced POST certification through the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission or equivalent certification through another state.
Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Troopers must be able to work shifts, holidays, and weekends.

NOTES:
  • FLSA: Non-exempt
  • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of hire.
  • Have a visual acuity of, or be correctable, to 20/20 or better.
  • All applicants must bring a photo ID (driver's license).
  • Applicants are required to successfully pass the Public Safety Testing process before attending the testing in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
  • Applicants must complete a program of initial training at the Wyoming Highway Patrol Academy and pass a series of tests, including a written, oral, physical, psychological, polygraph or equivalent examination, and drug test, as provided before the appointment.
  • Before you leave WHP testing, you will be given a list of agency vacancies for you to choose your top 3 duty station choices from the given vacancy list

  • When the offer of employment is made, the applicant will also be advised of their assigned duty station.

  • Qualifying eligibility and criteria for the hiring bonus:
    • Acceptance of a permanent, full-time position posted for public recruitment.
    • Temporary employees accepting a full-time position.
      • Current employees accepting a promotional opportunity - recruitment must have been opened to the public.
      • One year of service to WYDOT must be completed; failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive, and funds will be recouped from final pay.
      • Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.
      • Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.
      • If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
