Distinguishing Features of Work This is skilled work in the safe and efficient operation of heavy and specialized equipment used to maintain assets associated with the Flood Control Project and Stormwater Management System. May supervise other staff in completion of assigned tasks.
Work is performed independently, but under the general direction of a supervisor. Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas Class A or B CDL with both air brake and tanker endorsements. The days and hours for this position: Monday-Friday 7:15 am-3:45 pm Bargaining Unit: Service Employee's International (SEIU) **Employees within the department or division shall be given first consideration** **Posting may close at any time ** Examples of Work Performed Perform assigned maintenance and construction tasks through the operation of heavy equipment including but not limited to the operation of backhoes, bulldozers, scrapers, and snowplows.
Perform assigned tasks through the operation of specialized equipment including but not limited to combination cleaners, pumps, and television inspection systems. Clean, repair, and replace storm sewer conduits and structures. Perform maintenance tasks associated with mechanical equipment to ensure proper and safe operations.
Assist supervisors on specified tasks, including but not limited to completion of daily work assignments with necessary documentation. These examples are not intended to be all-inclusive. Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
Requirements of Work Considerable knowledge of equipment operations including but not limited to the operations of equipment identified in this job description. Ability to perform work with limited supervision and to supervise other crew members. Considerable knowledge of construction operations (materials, methods, tools, etc.) including but not limited brick repairs and concrete works
Ability to operate a fire hydrant and to pull 1" to 2.5" hose with 100 pounds of resistance. Ability to remove debris from manholes with a long-handled shovel and work in confined spaces while wearing the proper personal protective equipment. Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds independently and up to 150 pounds with the assistance of another person
Ability to work outdoors during normal and inclement weather conditions, tolerate airborne environmental nuisances associated machine and traffic exhaust, and tolerate equipment and machinery noise with the use of the appropriate personal protective equipment. Ability to continuously perform tasks that require one to push, pull, climb, bend, twist, reach, stand, and walk up to half a mile or more during extended periods of time including during an eight hour work shift. Ability to respond to emergencies during normal working hours and after hours in low light conditions.
Ability to properly and safely enter and exit machinery including machinery with steep steps that are about two feet apart. Ability to follow directions and perform all daily required tasks including cleaning, construction, and maintenance tasks. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
Possession of, and ability to maintain a valid Kansas Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements, or, depending upon position, a Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements. If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country. This position will require working outdoors in inclement weather including but not limited to, rain, snow, ice, sleet, heat, and humidity plus snow and ice removal and/or emergency response operations that would include operating equipment and vehicles on overnight shifts, weekends and in low-light and low visibility conditions, or other adverse weather conditions.
An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace. Experience and Training Required Experience and Training One (1) year of experience in construction. A valid Class B CDL with airbrake and tanker endorsement.
If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship. Preferred Experience and Training One and a half (1.5) years of experience in the operation of heavy and/or specialized equipment used in cleaning, construction, and/or maintenance activities
