Job description

Employment Type:Full timeShift:Day ShiftDescription:Position Purpose:

The surgical technologist, using the principles of medical asepsis, prepares the operating room for surgical cases of all specialties and instruments the surgical procedures anticipating the needs of the surgeon. The surgical technologist provides care within the MercyOne North Iowa Standards of Care, AORN Standards of Care and Practice and the Operating Room Policies and Procedures.

What you Will Do:

  • Assists the circulating nurse in assessing the patients' needs and helps to develop and implement the plan of care.

  • Provides care to all surgical patients in accordance with the operating room's performance standards, physician preference cards, and the AORN Standards of Care and Practice.

  • Assists in setting up rooms.

  • Secures safe transport of the patient if needed.

  • Confirms correctness of the surgical site, prepares the pre-operative site, instruments the case, manages the sterile field and specimens, and turns the room around under the supervision of the circulating nurse.

  • Serves as a steward for the hospital's human and material resources.

  • Meets productivity expectations of unit/department as defined by unit manager.

  • Identifies accurate changes on surgeons' preference cards.

  • Utilizes and maintains appropriate supplies during the case and in the department.

  • Develops and maintains knowledge/skills in all surgical specialties.

Hours:

  • Day Shift - 8 hour shifts available, will consider 10-hour shifts.

  • Call every 4th weekend; or as needed by department

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Graduate of a surgical technologist program is required, or graduate of an LPN program with Surgical experience.

  • Certification as a surgical technologist required.

  • LPN license required if graduate of LPN program.

  • Must have at least 2 years of experience functioning as a Surgical Tech.

  • Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer-LIVE class only) via current card prior to employment or within 60 days of hire and maintains current status.

  • Must provide proof of Mandatory Reporting for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training prior to employment or within 6 months of hire and maintain current status per State of Iowa guidelines
