Job Description

Middle School Head Wrestling Coach

Job Summary

The Middle School Head Wrestling Coach is responsible for leading, organizing, and supervising the Brown County Middle School wrestling program. The coach provides instruction in the fundamental skills, techniques, rules, and strategies of wrestling while fostering teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship, and personal growth. The Head Coach is responsible for planning and conducting practices, supervising student-athletes during practices and competitions, promoting a positive team culture, and ensuring compliance with all Brown County Schools, IHSAA/ISSA (or governing association), and athletic department policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Plan, organize, and conduct safe, effective, and engaging practices that develop individual and team skills.
  2. Instruct student-athletes in the rules, regulations, techniques, conditioning, and strategies of wrestling.
  3. Organize and direct individual, small group, and team practice activities.
  4. Evaluate athlete performance, assess skill development, and provide constructive feedback to improve performance.
  5. Develop competition lineups and assist in determining match strategy.
  6. Supervise student-athletes during all practices, competitions, travel, and team activities.
  7. Promote good sportsmanship, teamwork, character, respect, and appropriate behavior among student-athletes.
  8. Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism and respectful conduct toward students, officials, opponents, parents, and spectators.
  9. Follow established district procedures in the event of illness or injury and ensure appropriate supervision at all times.
  10. Maintain accurate records, including eligibility forms, emergency medical information, attendance, equipment inventories, and other required documentation.
  11. Maintain the wrestling room, equipment storage areas, and all athletic equipment in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
  12. Issue, collect, inventory, and account for all uniforms, equipment, and supplies assigned to the wrestling program.
  13. Submit end-of-season reports, including award recipients, equipment inventories, and any other required documentation.
  14. Coordinate and participate in special events such as parent meetings, recognition nights, awards programs, and athletic department functions.
  15. Communicate effectively with student-athletes, parents, school staff, administrators, and the Athletic Director regarding program expectations and schedules.
  16. Support and enforce Brown County Schools' student-athlete eligibility requirements, attendance expectations, and athletic policies.
  17. Promote academic success by encouraging student-athletes to maintain satisfactory academic progress and citizenship.
  18. Demonstrate and model nondiscriminatory practices in all aspects of the athletic program.
  19. Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or Building Principal.

Qualifications

  • Previous wrestling coaching and/or competitive wrestling experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of wrestling techniques, rules, training methods, and athlete development.
  • Ability to effectively motivate and communicate with middle school student-athletes.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships with students, parents, staff, officials, and community members.
  • Must meet all Brown County Schools coaching requirements, including background checks and required certifications (CPR, First Aid, concussion training, and other state or district requirements).

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to demonstrate wrestling techniques and supervise physically demanding practices.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, lift, and move athletic equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours during the wrestling season.
  • Ability to travel with the team to competitions and events.

Terms of Employment

  • Seasonal coaching position.
  • Compensation according to the Brown County Schools extracurricular salary schedule.
  • Reports to the Athletic Director and Building Principal.
