Weekend Steel Hauler information

What is a weekend steel hauler?

A Weekend Steel Hauler is a truck driver who specializes in transporting steel products, such as coils, beams, or sheets, typically over weekends. These haulers often operate flatbed trucks and are responsible for safely securing heavy steel loads, delivering them to construction sites, warehouses, or manufacturing facilities. Weekend shifts may involve long hours, adherence to strict safety regulations, and flexibility to accommodate customer schedules. This role is vital for keeping steel supply chains moving efficiently, especially when regular weekday operations are paused or limited.

What are some common challenges faced by weekend steel haulers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Weekend Steel Haulers often encounter challenges such as tight delivery schedules, navigating heavy loads safely, and adapting to less predictable weekend traffic patterns. To manage these effectively, drivers should plan routes in advance, maintain ongoing communication with dispatchers, and adhere strictly to safety protocols for loading and securing steel. Building strong organizational skills and staying updated on weather and road conditions can also help ensure timely and safe deliveries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend steel hauler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Steel Hauler, you need a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), experience with flatbed or specialized hauling, and a solid understanding of load securement and safety regulations. Proficiency in using GPS navigation systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and load securement tools is typically required. Excellent time management, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you stand out in this role. These skills are vital for ensuring safe, timely deliveries, minimizing risk, and maintaining compliance with transportation laws.

Pay: $2,000 to $2,100 per week | Freight: Dedicated stainless-steel flatbed freight with planned backhaul loads

Location: Mobile, AL 36602

• $5,000 sign-on bonus for qualified drivers
• Assigned Kenworth T680 tractors
• Weekend home time every week
• Dedicated stainless-steel freight

Role: CDL-A Flatbed Truck Driver

The Route: This account is built around dedicated stainless-steel freight moving from a customer near Calvert, Alabama. After each delivery, drivers are assigned available backhaul freight that helps position the truck for the next outbound load instead of returning empty. This freight pattern supports productive miles and dependable weekly earnings.

• Smaller stainless-steel coils
• Flat stainless-steel sheets
• Planned backhaul freight
• Primarily live loading and unloading

Your Equipment: Drivers are assigned newer-model Kenworth T680 tractors matched with 2025 Extreme 48-foot flatbed trailers. Each trailer is equipped with 12 winches, straps, and two lightweight six-foot drop tarps to support the account's securement requirements.

Approximately 75% of loads require tarping. The lighter tarps used on this account are easier to handle than traditional heavy flatbed tarps, and tarp pay is included within the overall compensation program.

Pay & Benefits: Earn $2,000 to $2,100 per week while enjoying weekend home time with a 34-hour reset. Qualified drivers are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus.

• $100 per day orientation pay
• Monday through Thursday orientation
• Hotel accommodations provided
• Meals and travel arrangements included

Experience Required: This position is designed for experienced flatbed drivers who are comfortable hauling steel products and securing every load safely. Applicants should already have steel-hauling, tarping, and load-securement experience before joining this account.
