Description
A dual-function role carrying equal responsibility for (1) building and administering a comprehensive intramural and recreational sports program and (2) the preparation, maintenance, and management of athletic facilities and the coordination of athletic and campus events. The position reports to the Director of Athletics and the Director of Facilities & Equipment Operations and supports athletes, students, coaches, and instructors in athletics, recreation, and class activities.
Examples of Duties
Intramural & Recreational Sports Program
  • Plan, develop, and administer a year-round intramural/recreational program, including leagues, tournaments, and special events; design formats and manage all scheduling, playoffs, and championships.
  • Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate officials, scorekeepers, and student employees.
  • Establish and enforce rules, eligibility, conduct, and participant-safety protocols, including injury reporting and emergency response.
  • Market offerings to grow participation; manage registration, communications, program budgets, supplies, and participation reporting.

Athletic Facilities Operations & Maintenance
  • Prepare and maintain fields, courts, and surfaces for practices, contests, intramurals, and rec use, including scoring/timing devices and event setup.
  • Inspect facilities and grounds, identify maintenance and safety needs, and coordinate repairs with appropriate departments and vendors.
  • Maintain, store, and inventory all athletic, recreational, and grounds equipment; ensure proper care, issuing/retrieving, order prep, and each sport's laundry.
  • Manage facility scheduling and access across athletics, intramurals, PE classes, and approved users; monitor safety and risk-management standards.

Event Management & Game-Day Operations
  • Coordinate and direct set-up, changeover, and breakdown for athletic contests, intramural events, and campus events in athletics facilities.
  • Serve in a game-day operations role - logistics, equipment, signage, seating, staffing, and field/court readiness - working with coaches, officials, and outside groups.
  • Coordinate facility-use agreements and event logistics with the Director of Facilities & Equipment Operations; assist with crowd management and post-event cleanup.

General
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics and the Director of Facilities and Equipment Operations.

Typical Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Sport/Recreation Management, Physical Education, or related field (Preferred); High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
  • Experience administering intramural/recreational/athletic programs and/or managing facilities and events (Preferred).

Supplemental Information
  • Strong written/oral communication, organizational, scheduling, and supervisory skills.
  • Computer knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office; scheduling/intramural-management software a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience in operations and field maintenance equipment; ability to work evenings, weekends, and event-driven hours.
  • Valid Virginia driver's license.
