What is a weekend software job?

Weekend Software jobs refer to positions where software professionals work primarily on weekends, either as part-time employees, contractors, or freelancers. These roles can involve a range of tasks such as software development, testing, maintenance, or technical support. Weekend Software jobs are ideal for those seeking flexibility, additional income, or opportunities to gain experience outside of the traditional Monday-to-Friday workweek. Companies may offer such roles to ensure continuous development cycles, cover urgent tasks, or provide 24/7 support. The nature of the work and required skills are similar to standard software jobs, but with schedules focused on weekends.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend software engineer?

To thrive as a Weekend Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, knowledge of software development methodologies, and typically a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, coding frameworks, and collaborative tools such as Jira or Slack is expected. Excellent time management, communication skills, and the ability to work independently help set you apart in this flexible role. These abilities ensure that projects are delivered efficiently and to a high standard, even on a non-traditional schedule.

How does working as a weekend software engineer typically differ from a standard weekday software engineering role?

As a Weekend Software Engineer, you'll often tackle high-priority tasks or provide critical support during off-peak hours, when fewer team members are present. This role may involve more autonomy, as well as direct communication with stakeholders to resolve urgent issues or deploy updates with minimal disruption. While you might not participate in all weekday team meetings, effective asynchronous communication is essential to stay aligned with broader project goals. The weekend schedule can offer flexibility, but it also requires strong self-management and the ability to quickly address unexpected technical challenges.

Job description

Full Stack Software Engineer (Node.js/React)

About TMO,

The Mortgage Office is the most trusted loan management platform in private lending. Founded in 1978, we power the full loan lifecycle for over 1,100 lenders, including private money firms, CDFIs, nonprofits, and government agencies, servicing more than $190 billion in loans.

We're recognized as G2's #1 Loan Servicing Software and Capterra's Best Ease of Use. With offices in Huntington Beach and San Mateo, we're now building the next generation of AI-native lending tools, and hiring a Full Stack Software Engineer (Node.js/React) to help lead that work.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Full-Stack Software Engineer with 3+ years of professional experience in Node.js, TypeScript, and React, who will build the core user experience of our application. This role will focus on developing high-quality, user-facing interfaces while also contributing to backend services that power our platform, supporting our continued growth as a SaaS business and strengthening internal processes, performance, and cross-team alignment.

What You'll Own

  • Develop and maintain backend services and APIs using Node.js and TypeScript to support front-end functionality.
  • Build responsive, type-safe frontend interfaces using React and TypeScript.
  • Partner with the core backend team to define API contracts and ensure efficient data fetching patterns (REST or GraphQL) for the frontend application.
  • Collaborate with designers and product managers to translate requirements into intuitive, polished user experiences.

What You Bring

Required

  • 3+ years of professional, post-college software engineering experience as a full-stack developer, excluding academic projects and coursework.
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript across backend and frontend codebases, building and maintaining production-grade systems in a professional environment.
  • Extensive experience developing backend services using Node.js, including RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and service-oriented or microservices architectures used in production.
  • Solid experience with React for building scalable web applications, including component design, Hooks, state management, and asynchronous data handling.
  • Hands-on experience working with relational and/or NoSQL databases, including schema design, migrations, and performance-conscious query development.
  • Strong understanding of frontend architecture, including reusable component patterns, client-side data fetching, error handling, and rendering performance considerations.
  • Experience implementing authentication and authorization flows across backend APIs and frontend applications.
  • Familiarity with performance optimization on both frontend and backend, including efficient API design, caching strategies, and frontend rendering optimizations.
  • Ability to deliver features end-to-end, from API and data model design through frontend integration and user experience

Preferred

  • Experience with modern frontend tooling (Vite, Webpack, ESLint, Prettier).
  • Familiarity with component libraries (e.g., Material UI, Tailwind CSS) to accelerate UI development.
  • Proficient with database technologies (SQL or NoSQL) and writing server-side logic to support frontend requirements.
  • Experience integrating complex APIs and visualizing data (e.g., using charting libraries or building interactive dashboards).
  • Competitive compensation (Base: $150,000 - $170,000) + Bonus
  • 401(k) matching
  • Wellness programs
  • Employee recognition programs
  • Team building & on-site amenities

Life at TMO,

TMO pairs 45+ years of category leadership with a culture that's still hands-on and collaborative. Ideas flow freely, every team member has a voice, and we have fun while we build.

Our Values: DRIVE

  • Data-Driven: numbers over opinions.
  • Respect: high on empathy, low on ego.
  • Initiative & Agency: don't wait to be told.
  • Value to Customers: create value for them above all else.
  • Evolve: progress over perfection.

The pay range for this role is:

150,000 - 170,000 USD per year (San Mateo, CA (Hybrid))
