Weekend Software Engineering Internships information

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a weekend software engineering internship, and how much responsibility will I have?

During a weekend software engineering internship, you can expect to work on real-world projects such as bug fixes, feature enhancements, or prototype development under the guidance of experienced engineers. Interns are typically entrusted with specific tasks within a larger team project, allowing for hands-on experience while ensuring support is readily available. Although the scope of responsibility may be limited compared to full-time roles, you'll have opportunities to contribute code, participate in code reviews, and attend team meetings. This collaborative environment helps interns develop technical skills, learn industry best practices, and build professional networks, all while balancing academic commitments.

What are weekend software engineering internships?

Weekend software engineering internships are part-time opportunities for students or early-career professionals to gain practical experience in software development, typically working on Saturdays and Sundays. These internships allow participants to develop coding skills, collaborate on real projects, and learn from experienced engineers while accommodating weekday academic or job commitments. They are often remote or hybrid, making them accessible to those with busy schedules. Weekend internships can help build a strong resume and may lead to full-time roles in the future.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Weekend Software Engineering Internships, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Software Engineering Intern, you typically need foundational programming skills, basic computer science knowledge, and current enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, popular programming languages (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), and collaboration platforms is often expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help interns stand out and contribute to team projects. These skills and qualities enable interns to quickly adapt, add value to real-world tasks, and gain the most from their limited internship hours.

Job description

Software Engineer

Layer is looking for a Software Engineer to join our team. You will work with a small team on a web application designed for Architects, Construction, and Building Operations professionals to manage building data across the entire lifecycle of a building.

As a Software Engineer, you will be doing front-end and back-end web development in JavaScript (TypeScript) using modern web technologies. You will be on a small development team working to continuously improve our product for our users. Layer is a progressive web application designed to work on most desktop & mobile devices. We regularly ship new features to production and we want you to make an immediate impact.

Learn more about who we are and what we do.

We're Looking For
  • Experience - 1 to 3+ years in modern JavaScript web development. You will be working in Angular, React, Node.js, and a number of Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services including Firebase. Bonus points if you have GCP or Firebase experience, but this is not a requirement.
  • Problem solvers - we want you to be passionate about solving problems for our users (more on that below). We move fast, break things, and work closely with our users to build a better product.
  • Owners - we're a small team, which means you will be taking ownership of your work throughout the development process.
We Are
  • Focused - we are extremely protective of your time. You'll spend more time building and less time in meetings.
  • Balanced - no nights and no weekends. We have a minimum vacation policy of 3 weeks per year, and if you aren't taking enough vacation we'll be bugging you about it.
  • Relaxed - we work hard, but don't take ourselves too seriously. Our engineering team is based in Lincoln, Nebraska, with most of us split our time in the office and home about 50/50.
Some Examples

To give you a taste of the work we do (and to very humbly brag about our awesome team), here's some work we're really proud of:

  • Drag and drop PDF Report builder
  • Export project data into a template and reuse it across any project in a user's organization
  • A native Barcode Scanner plugin for iOS that integrates with our progressive web app
  • The Layer API
  • A full project data sync (client first) using Replicache
Compensation & Benefits

We offer a competitive compensation package (with equity) that includes benefits like remote working, flexible schedule, unlimited vacation, 401k matching, health/dental/vision, professional development stipend, team lunches in office on Tuesdays, and more.

Location

Hybrid - Lincoln area with two days a week (Tuesday and Thursday, typically) in our Lincoln office and the rest remote.
