They may be employed part-time, on a contract basis, or as part of a company's flexible work schedule to handle maintenance, updates, or specific projects outside regular business hours. This role is ideal for those who prefer or require non-traditional work hours, and it can involve responsibilities such as coding, debugging, system monitoring, or supporting deployments that are scheduled to minimize business disruptions.

What are some unique challenges and benefits of working as a weekend software engineer?

However, this role also offers flexibility and the opportunity to focus on tasks with fewer real-time interruptions. You’ll likely work on maintenance, urgent bug fixes, or project sprints scheduled for off-peak hours. This experience can enhance your problem-solving skills and may position you for future roles that require adaptability or involve critical support work. Additionally, many organizations value weekend engineers for their reliability and willingness to support essential systems outside standard hours.

Job description

About Calfus

At Calfus, we are known for delivering cutting-edge AI agents and products that transform businesses in previously unimaginable ways. We empower companies to harness the full potential of AI, unlocking opportunities they never imagined possible before the AI era. Our software engineering teams are highly valued by customers, whether start-ups or established enterprises, because we consistently deliver solutions that drive revenue growth. Our ERP solution teams have successfully implemented cloud solutions and developed tools that seamlessly integrate with ERP systems, reducing manual work so teams can focus on high-impact tasks.

None of this would be possible without talent like you! Our global teams thrive on collaboration, and we’re actively looking for skilled professionals to strengthen our in-house expertise and help us deliver exceptional AI, software engineering, and solutions using enterprise applications.

As one of the fastest-growing companies in our industry, we take pride in fostering a culture of innovation where new ideas are always welcomed without hesitation. We are driven and expect the same dedication from our team members. Our speed, agility, and dedication set us apart, and we perform best when surrounded by high-energy, driven individuals.

To continue our rapid growth and deliver an even greater impact, we invite you to apply for our open positions and become part of our journey!

About the Role

We are looking for an early-career Software Engineer who leans heavily toward DevOps and platform work. You will spend your days in Linux, writing Python and shell to automate the parts of our delivery process that should not be manual, packaging services into containers, and keeping build and deployment pipelines healthy for engineering teams across multiple customer engagements.

Location: Pleasanton, CA (Onsite 100%)

What You Will Do

  • Write and maintain Python and shell automation for builds, deployments, environment setup, log processing, and routine operational work that currently eats engineering time.
  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs
  • Containerize applications and services with Docker. Write clean, small, reproducible images and keep Compose setups working for local development and testing.
  • Administer and troubleshoot Linux systems. Diagnose performance issues, disk and memory pressure, networking problems, permissions, and service failures using standard tooling.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines so that a commit reliably becomes a tested, versioned, deployable artifact without anyone babysitting it.
  • Set up and tune monitoring, logging, and alerting so problems surface before a customer reports them.
  • Support engineering teams’ day to day: unblock broken builds, fix flaky environments, and improve the developer experience for the people around you.
  • Apply security and compliance practices in your work. Calfus operates under SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO/IEC 27001, so secrets handling, access control, and audit trails are part of the job rather than an afterthought.
  • Write documentation and runbooks that someone else can follow and improve the ones you find lacking.

On your first day, we’d expect you to have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in DevOps, Platform Engineering, SRE, or Software Engineering. Relevant internships, co-ops, personal projects, or open-source contributions are also valued. New graduates with strong hands-on experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux, including the command line, filesystems, processes, permissions, package management, SSH, systemd, and basic networking.
  • General systems administration experience across Windows, macOS, or Linux environments.
  • Hands-on experience with Docker, including building images, writing Dockerfiles, and working with multi-container environments.
  • Strong backend development skills in Node.js, Java, Python, or Go.
  • Experience working with REST or GraphQL APIs, microservices, and relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
  • Basic knowledge of frontend frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js.
  • Ability to write clean Python and Bash scripts for automation, tooling, and system tasks.
  • Good understanding of Git, including branching, merging, rebasing, resolving conflicts, and pull request workflows.
  • Basic networking knowledge, including DNS, HTTP, TCP/IP, ports, firewalls, and TLS.
  • Familiarity with Identity and Access Management (IAM) or Privileged Access Management (PAM) concepts is a plus but not required. Training will be provided.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to explain technical issues clearly to both engineers and customers.

We’d be excited if you also have:

  • CI/CD tooling such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins.
  • Exposure to a cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP) at the level of spinning up compute, storage, and networking.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes concepts, even if only from a local cluster or coursework.
  • Infrastructure as code with Terraform or Ansible.
  • Monitoring and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or the ELK stack.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and at least one relational database.
  • Experience deploying or supporting AI and machine learning workloads.
  • Relevant certifications (Linux Foundation, AWS, Azure, Docker, Kubernetes).

Compensation:

Salary range: Between $90,000.00 to $110,000.00 per year. Pay is based on several factors including geographical locations but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc.

Offered Benefits:

Calfus prioritizes the well-being and financial security of its employees & families by providing comprehensive health coverage, which includes medical (by Kaiser & Aetna), Dental & Vision (by Guardian) plans. This ensures that employees and families have access to essential healthcare services, addressing both preventive and ongoing medical needs.

Additionally, Calfus understands the importance of long-term financial planning for its employees. To support this, the company offers a retirement savings plan (401k) where you can start saving as soon as you join!

We offer paid time off (PTO) to eligible U.S. employees. PTO is designed to give you flexibility for rest, personal time, and life needs. Details on accrual and usage are provided in the company's PTO policy.
