To thrive as a Weekend Shopify Developer, you need strong skills in web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), Shopify's Liquid templating language, and experience customizing e-commerce platforms, usually backed by prior Shopify development work or relevant certifications. Familiarity with tools like the Shopify Admin, Shopify CLI, Git, and third-party app integrations is typically required. These competencies ensure efficient delivery of high-quality, customized Shopify solutions to meet client needs within limited timeframes.

What are the typical challenges faced by a Weekend Shopify developer, and how can they be managed effectively?

Weekend Shopify Developers often work on tight timelines and may need to handle urgent updates, bug fixes, or new feature rollouts during off-hours. This can require strong time management and the ability to quickly troubleshoot issues independently, as other team members or stakeholders may not be immediately available. Clear communication with clients or project managers before the weekend begins is essential to set expectations and prioritize tasks. Additionally, maintaining detailed documentation helps ensure smooth handovers and continuity for weekday teams.

Job description

LOCOMOTIVE is an award-winning digital and creative agency with offices in Raleigh, North Carolina and Galway, Ireland. Our global teams are driven by a passion for innovation and excellence in marketing strategy and execution, empowering our client’s brands to reach their fullest potential through strategic growth initiatives and cutting-edge solutions.

If you are interested in working in a fast-paced, ambitious environment, which places an emphasis on strategic thinking and long-term customer value, we would love to hear from you.

Our Web, Research & Development, Data Science, Design and Digital teams work together to build effective websites, platforms and tools for our clients. We value technical quality, practical innovation, clear communication and taking ownership of the outcomes we deliver.

Position Overview

LOCOMOTIVE is looking for a Senior Web Developer to support website delivery across a range of client projects.

This role is focused primarily on client websites rather than internal product development. You will work across new website builds, redesigns, migrations, integrations and ongoing improvements.

You should be comfortable joining established projects, understanding unfamiliar codebases and CMS configurations, and taking ownership of work from requirements and estimation through development, QA and deployment.

You will also work closely with our R&D team, particularly where client website work involves automation, AI, custom tooling, APIs or emerging web technologies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain websites across modern CMS platforms
  • Build responsive pages, templates and reusable components from Figma designs
  • Develop custom CMS functionality, integrations and editorial workflows
  • Troubleshoot issues across unfamiliar and inherited codebases
  • Support website builds, redesigns, replatforming projects and migrations
  • Integrate websites with APIs, CRMs, analytics tools and third‑party platforms
  • Improve website performance, accessibility, security and technical SEO
  • Scope development work, provide estimates and identify technical risks
  • Manage work through development, testing, deployment and post‑launch support
  • Collaborate with Design, SEO, Digital, Data Science and R&D teams
  • Review and support the work of other developers where required
  • Contribute to shared development standards, tools and processes
Technical Requirements
  • Strong commercial experience developing content‑managed websites
  • Strong experience with at least three major CMS platforms
  • Experience creating reusable templates, components and content models
  • Experience integrating REST APIs and third‑party services
  • Confident use of Git, GitHub and pull request workflows
  • Experience managing staging and production deployments
  • Strong debugging and problem‑solving skills
  • Good understanding of web performance, accessibility and security
  • Ability to produce maintainable, reusable and well‑documented code

Experience with TypeScript is strongly preferred.

Relevant CMS experience should include:

  • WordPress
  • Webflow
  • Contentful
  • Sanity
  • Builder.io
  • Shopify
  • Other headless or composable CMS platforms
Additional Experience

Experience in the following would be beneficial:

  • TypeScript, React or Next.js
  • Headless and composable CMS architectures
  • Custom WordPress themes, plugins and Gutenberg blocks
  • Cloudflare, DNS, caching and hosting infrastructure
  • Website localisation and multisite environments
  • Google Tag Manager, GA4 and consent management
  • Technical SEO and structured data
  • CI/CD and automated testing
  • High‑traffic or enterprise website environments
  • Website migrations and CMS replatforming
AI‑Native Development

We are looking for a developer who is already actively working with AI‑native development practices and understands the terminology, tooling and design patterns involved.

Candidates should have practical familiarity with:

  • Spec‑driven development and structured implementation planning
  • Coding agents and agentic development workflows
  • Model Context Protocol (MCP) and tool‑enabled AI systems
  • Context engineering, prompt design and reusable agent instructions
  • AI‑assisted debugging, testing, code review and documentation
  • Human‑in‑the‑loop workflows, guardrails and output validation
  • Building or integrating AI‑powered features, tools or automations
  • Evaluating when agentic approaches are appropriate and when conventional development is more effective

Developers remain responsible for reviewing, testing, securing and maintaining all work delivered with AI assistance.

Seniority Expectations

This is a senior role. You should be able to:

  • Work independently without detailed implementation instructions
  • Make sound and pragmatic technical decisions
  • Identify incomplete, unsuitable or risky requirements
  • Produce realistic estimates and communicate scope changes early
  • Understand the wider impact of changes across a website
  • Balance maintainability, quality, delivery speed and budget
  • Test your own work thoroughly
  • Communicate clearly with technical and non‑technical stakeholders
  • Support and provide guidance to other developers
  • Take responsibility for work through to production

Agency experience is strongly preferred, as the role involves moving between multiple clients, platforms and priorities.

Working Style

We are looking for someone who:

  • Takes ownership rather than waiting for detailed direction
  • Communicates proactively about progress, blockers and risks
  • Can challenge requirements constructively
  • Is comfortable working across disciplines and sharing knowledge
  • Approaches problems pragmatically without unnecessary overengineering
  • Can manage multiple projects while maintaining attention to detail
  • Has strong written and spoken English
  • Is comfortable working independently and asynchronously
Availability and Timezone

Our timezone preference is:

  • US West Coast
  • US East Coast
  • Other locations with substantial overlap with the US working day

Some flexibility may occasionally be required for releases or urgent production issues.

Application

Please provide:

  • Your CV or resume
  • Examples of recent websites or development projects
  • A brief explanation of your responsibilities on each project
  • Your experience with CMS platforms
  • Your location and timezone
  • Your typical weekly availability
  • Details of how you use AI‑assisted development tools

Shortlisted candidates may be asked to complete a small paid trial project before beginning an ongoing engagement.
