The Transportation Driver is responsible for transporting patients and/or equipment to and from various outside appointments, clinics, nursing facilities, hospitals, or other ancillary locations via hospital-owned vehicle. This position must integrate company values into daily practice.

This position is PRN Weekends

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Transports patients in a safe and professional manner
  • Assures vehicles are clean and in working order. Responsible for cleaning of inside of van utilizing appropriate chemicals between patients.
  • Communicates with various hospital staff in order to receive relevant data and instructions.
  • Inspects vehicle prior to daily vehicle usage for safe and comfortable patient transport. Reports vehicle concerns timely.
  • Assists with transferring and balancing patients. Ensures patients' physical and overall comfort.
  • Follows all patient safety and vehicle safety requirements. Responsible for knowing what PPE to apply to patient and driver prior to transport.
  • Notifies proper staff regarding changes in condition or behavior of patient.
  • May be required to work during inclement weather and other staffing emergencies.
  • Provides an environment conducive to safety for patients, visitors, and staff. Assesses the risks for safety and implements appropriate precautions. Complies with appropriate and approved safety and Infection Prevention standards.
  • Maintains regular attendance in keeping with assigned work schedule.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support overall effectiveness of the organization.

Requirements for consideration:


Minimum Education & Experience:

  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Basic Life Support card required.
  • Six months van transport experience preferred.

Required Licenses, Certifications, and/or Documentation:

  • Must maintain acceptable driving record, current class specific driver's license, and insurability.
  • Driving record must meet the standards of the Transportation Policy.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates proficiency using the machines, tools, equipment and/or work aids appropriate for the position.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to maintain quality, Infection Prevention, and safety standards.
  • Ability to maintain proper levels of confidentiality.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, compassionate and understanding.

Physical Requirements Over the Course of a Shift:

  • A significant amount of sitting, driving, and reaching, often for prolonged periods of time.
  • Both gross and precise motor functions.
  • Lifting/exerting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Possible exposure to bodily fluids.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to operate equipment and computer keyboard.
  • Close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to hear overhead pages.
