Responsible for the assessment and the insertion of vascular access lines for patients requiring an intravenous access device. Responsibility also includes coordinating the process of vascular access line placements, communication with primary care nurses and providing education for care and maintenance of vascular access devices. The Vascular Access Nurse directs the access process and team members, establishing a positive and professional rapport with other departments and staff, focusing on the provision of individualized quality patient care consistent with organizational standards and goals.

ยท Manages and coordinates the care of patients in a defined care delivery model for the placement of vascular access lines, utilizing the nursing process, which includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Participates in the patient plan of care based on identified patient needs in conjunction with the procedure treatment plan.

ยท Assesses and prioritizes patient care based on patient needs.

ยท Completes patient assessment and reassessment following the hospital policy.

ยท Verifies patient ID and Procedural Consent ensuring that it is in accordance with the physician order, and Site/Side is validated per procedure.

ยท Inspects patient's skin for rashes, bruises, lesions and old incisions, prosthesis, and implants and assesses patientโ€™s range of motion.

ยท Verifies history and physical.

ยท Questions patient about diseases, injuries, allergies, NPO status, previous procedures/surgery and anesthetic and/or medication & contrast reactions, and documenting prior to procedure.

ยท Provides a safe environment and promotes quality patient care through adherence to established care standards.

ยท Evaluates appropriate intravenous catheter /device to support optimal patient outcomes.

ยท Assesses the appropriateness for and demonstrates competency in placing Vascular Access Lines using a bedside Ultrasound Machine.

Delray Medical Center Vascular Access Nurse

ยท Reassesses the patient post procedures to include patientโ€™s response to treatment, changes in condition. Provides care and updates plan of care based on those identified needs.

ยท Documents the procedure and patient status on procedure sheets and nursing notes in accordance with the nursing process and standards of care.

ยท Identifies opportunities for and participates in performance improvement activities.

ยท Demonstrates competent professional practice and engages in opportunities for professional growth.

ยท Contributes to the productivity and professional environment of the Special Diagnostics department.

  • EDUCATION:
    • Education recognized by the State of Florida as qualification for Registered Nurse licensure.
    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred.
  • EXPERIENCE:
    • Two (2) years of experience in placing venous access devices. Three (3) years of clinical nursing experience in an acute care setting preferred. Experience placing PICC lines preferred.
  • REQUIRED CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE/REGISTRATION:
    • PICC LINE certification required.
    • Registration and current RN state license,
    • BLS. ACLS certification, PALS certification is preferred.
