Job description

Job Opening: Fabricator Level 2

Company: Pro weld LLC

Role Summary

Pro weld LLC is seeking a skilled Fabricator Level 2 to join our team. The Fabricator Level 2 is a mid-level professional who operates with minimal daily supervision. This individual is highly proficient in reading complex blueprints, performing advanced layout and fit-up (including multi-part structural assemblies, staircases, and handrails), and executing code-quality welds.

You will be expected to maintain high production speeds and ensure tight quality control. Additionally, a Level 2 Fabricator naturally steps into a mentorship role for Level 1 fabricators. We are looking for a professional who owns the table, rather than just being a pair of hands following orders. The ideal candidate can look at a bundle of raw steel and a drawing, anticipate where the weld heat will pull the metal, plan their tacks accordingly, and deliver a perfectly square, code-compliant assembly on time.

Key Responsibilities

1. Advanced Layout & Fit-Up

  • Independently lay out, fit, and tack complex assemblies from detailed shop drawings, including structural steel connections, moment frames, stair stringers, and architectural railings.
  • Apply trade math to calculate pitches, degrees, and drop dimensions for accurate miscellaneous metal fit-ups.
  • Build custom, reusable shop fixtures and jigs to maximize accuracy and efficiency on repetitive or high-volume production runs.

2. High-Standard Welding & Code Compliance

  • Execute high-quality structural welds in multiple positions using GMAW (MIG)..
  • Produce clean, structural welds that pass visual inspection and non-destructive testing (NDT), minimizing shop rework and grinding time.
  • Properly prep and weld various steel shapes, heavy plate, and thinner gauge miscellaneous metals without warping or distortion.

3. Production Efficiency & Material Control

  • Verify bills of materials (BOM) against shop drawings before cutting to catch detailing errors early.
  • Plan cutting lists strategically to maximize raw material yield and minimize drops and scrap.
  • Safely rig, balance, and flip massive weldments using overhead cranes, gantry systems, or forklifts.

4. Shop Leadership & Safety Mentorship

  • Delegate basic prep tasks to Level 1 fabricators, verifying their cut lengths and tolerances before fitting.
  • Actively model safe work habits, proper tool guard usage, and correct rigging practices across the shop floor.
  • Troubleshoot minor machine issues (such as saw tracking or welder feed issues) and keep critical shop machinery running smoothly.

Performance Expectations

A Fabricator Level 2 is measured by their precision, self-reliance, and ability to keep the workflow moving without constant management intervention.

Baseline Expectations for this role include:

  • Safety & Leadership: Maintain strict adherence to JHA standards and proactively step in to correct peer safety risks.
  • Quality & Precision: Hold tolerances within ±1/16 inch on critical fits with zero layout or squaring errors.
  • Efficiency & Production: Consistently meet or beat estimated shop hours on standard structural and miscellaneous jobs.
  • Autonomy & Problem Solving: Work entirely from drawings and solve standard fit-up and warping issues independently.

Pro weld LLC offers opportunities for growth. As you master these baselines, you will have the opportunity to work toward Level 3 by leading tool-box talks, acting as the final QC check for the bay, identifying process improvements, and solving complex architectural conflicts on paper.
