Weekend Reporter information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Reporter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Reporter, you need strong news judgment, writing skills, and a background in journalism or communications. Familiarity with digital content management systems, editing software, and social media tools is typically required. Exceptional time management, adaptability, and interpersonal communication skills help reporters excel in fast-paced, unpredictable news environments. These skills are essential for producing timely, accurate, and engaging coverage that meets audience expectations during high-traffic weekend periods.

What is the difference between Weekend Reporter vs Part-Time Journalist?

AspectWeekend ReporterPart-Time Journalist
CredentialsTypically requires a journalism degree or equivalent experienceSimilar credentials, often with flexible experience levels
Work EnvironmentWorks primarily on weekends, often in newsrooms or field reportingFlexible hours, may include weekends, in various media outlets
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in news organizations, local and national mediaUsed across diverse media platforms, including online and print

Weekend Reporters focus on covering news during weekends, often in a fast-paced environment, while Part-Time Journalists have flexible schedules that may include weekends but are not limited to them. Both roles require similar credentials and are used across various media outlets, but the Weekend Reporter role is more specifically tied to weekend coverage in news organizations.

What does a Weekend Reporter do?

A Weekend Reporter is a journalist who works primarily on weekends to cover breaking news, events, and stories that occur during that time. Their responsibilities often include attending events, conducting interviews, researching stories, and delivering news updates for print, broadcast, or online platforms. Weekend Reporters need to be flexible and ready to respond quickly to developing stories since news can happen at any time. They play a crucial role in ensuring continuous news coverage outside the typical weekday schedule.

What are some common challenges faced by Weekend Reporters and how can they be managed?

Weekend Reporters often face the challenge of covering breaking news with limited resources or staff, as newsrooms typically operate with smaller teams on weekends. This requires strong multitasking skills and the ability to work independently under tight deadlines. Additionally, weekend news can be unpredictable, so flexibility and quick decision-making are essential. Building good communication with editors and utilizing digital tools for remote collaboration can help manage these challenges effectively.

Job description

OVERVIEW OF THE COMPANY Fox TV Stations FOX Television Stations owns and operates 29 full power broadcast television stations in the U.S. These include stations located in 14 of the top 15 largest designated market areas, or DMAs, and duopolies in 11 DMAs, including the three largest DMAs (New York, Los Angeles and Chicago). Of these stations, 18 are affiliated with the FOX Network. In addition to distributing sports, entertainment and syndicated content, our television stations collectively produce approximately 1,200 hours of local news every week. These stations leverage viewer, distributor and advertiser demand for the FOX Network's national content. JOB DESCRIPTION The content generation team at FOX 26 is re-imagining how local news is gathered, presented and disseminated, across multiple platforms with a keen emphasis on streaming/CTV. We no longer wait for appointed times to deliver content. We're a 24/7 LIVE/HAPPENING NOW & AUTHENTIC STREAMING FIRST news organization. As we continue to evolve, we're hiring a Weekend Anchor / Reporter who has a passion for creating content across live streaming news programs, digital news sites, social media, and linear TV. In this role, you'll anchor weekend streaming hours. During the week, your focus will be reporting across multiple platforms and filling in behind the desk as needed. Here's what you'll need to be successful in this role:
  • A streaming and digital first mindset, that has evolved beyond TV news constructs. You're not talking about your plan for the 5pm or 6pm newscast. You're talking about how you will deliver content NOW and throughout the day on FOX Local.
  • You ditched the "anchor voice" long ago and you've mastered a more authentic style of delivery that doesn't rely on a teleprompter. In fact, we don't even use teleprompters in our 7 hours of daily live streaming news.
  • You already understand and execute non-traditional storytelling formats using video, text, graphics, and music. And you create that content for live streaming, website and social platforms in a way that can later be repurposed for linear.
  • You're totally cool never doing a TV news package again. We don't want them and our creators are learning to tell stories with less formality, more authenticity (no "anchor voices") and in ways that are tailored specifically to platform.
  • You've already created a significant social footprint across Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. Your content is rooted in news, not just selfies and vacation photos.
You must have at least 5 years of experience as an anchor and reporter in a professional news operation. Candidates who have experience hosting unscripted, live news streaming programs will really get our attention. This is not an entry-level position or a position for candidates who do not have a news gathering background. We're a 24/7 news operation, so you must be able to work non-traditional hours, including early morning or late-night shifts, weekends and holidays as needed. We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, gender identity, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. We will consider for employment qualified applicants with criminal histories consistent with applicable law. Pursuant to state and local pay disclosure requirements, the pay rate/range for this role, with final offer amount dependent on education, skills, experience, and location is $110,000.00-120,000.00 annually. This role is also eligible for various benefits, including medical/dental/vision, insurance, a 401(k) plan, paid time off, and other benefits in accordance with applicable plan documents. Benefits for Union represented employees will be in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement. View more detail about FOX Benefits.
