Job description

Birch Creek Energy is a rapidly growing utility-scale solar development company focused on mid-market projects across multiple RTOs. Recently recapitalized and ranked #3 on Inc. 5000's list of Fastest Growing Companies (2023), the Company is actively building its independent power producer (IPP) platform and executing meaningful project M&A. With a team of approximately 60 professionals, Birch Creek seeks self-starters who share its commitment to accelerating solar development across the United States.

This is a unique opportunity for a professional with demonstrated experience as a Civil Project Engineer of Utility Scale renewable construction projects to join a growing and dynamic company.

Birch Creek's main offices are located in St. Louis (HQ) and Los Angeles. Remote-work candidates are welcome.


Job Overview:

  • Reporting to the Sr Director of Execution Engineering, the Civil Project Engineer is responsible for managing engineering from late-stage development through completion of construction. This position is an integral part of executing Birch Creek Energy's 13 GW of solar and battery storage project pipeline in multiple states throughout the U.S.
  • Through design review and construction support, the Civil Project Engineer will ensure that projects are designed and constructed to meet Birch Creek's technical specifications.
  • Additionally, the Civil Project Engineer will provide support to various teams at Birch Creek including Development, Execution Project Management, and Project Finance as projects move through design, financing, and construction.
  • This role requires up to 25% travel each month

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Manage design of ECS/SWPPP and help support NPDES permitting process during late-stage development within markets with long permitting timelines.
  • Attend AHJ meetings for permit applications and track AHJ comment resolution throughout the permit process.
  • Provide input on appropriate Geotech and hydrology scopes and review reports upon receipt from consultants.
  • Support the EPC RFP process by creating technical exhibits, reviewing proposals, and responding to RFIs.
  • Attend site walks with EPC and AHJ during detailed design and construction phases.
  • Manage the basis of design and specification documents to provide updates based on project specifics and lessons learned.
  • Review and provide input for EPC LNTP and contract technical exhibits.
  • Host project design meetings with EPCs and consultants.
  • Review and comment on 30%, 60%, 90% and IFC design packages from Civil and Structural design disciplines.
  • Coordinate with Electrical Project Engineer throughout design and construction to ensure a cohesive approach across engineering disciplines.
  • Provide support to Project Finance during Independent Engineer (IE) review and investor diligence to answer project risk comments.
  • Complete submittal reviews and provide RFI support during construction within civil, structural, and geotechnical disciplines.
  • Coordinate with Execution Project Management to resolve civil related EPC change orders.
  • Review construction photos and documentation to identify any potential quality issues.
  • Assist in gathering information to achieve Notice of Termination and close out all land disturbance and SWPPP permits.
  • Evaluate MC, SC, and Final completion documentation.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Working knowledge of the utility scale solar design process.
  • Ability to use engineering software like AutoCAD, Civil 3D, PVcase, PVsyst, GIS, and Excel.
  • Working knowledge of civil grading constraints with various racking systems.
  • Working knowledge of construction costs, means and methods, and value engineering opportunities.
  • Working knowledge of ESC and SWM design process.
  • Working knowledge of ASTM and ASCE standards.
  • Ability to establish strong relationships with EPCs.
  • Proven problem solving and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment.

Experience & Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
  • Minimum of 4 years of related project engineer experience
  • PE in Civil Engineering is desired but not required

The annual salary for the successful candidate will depend on geographic location, skills, relevant and demonstrated experience, education, training and certifications, and other factors permitted by law.
