Job description

Job Description :

The New York Post delivers news, sports, pop culture and entertainment with unmatched speed, attitude and authority, reaching more than 90 million unique viewers each month. With a 225 year legacy and a fast moving digital first newsroom, the Post operates across print, digital, video, audio, app, television and commerce, and continues to define the city’s most talked about stories.

The New York Post is seeking a tough, experienced and sharp‑eyed journalist with exceptional news judgment to join the team as a part‑time Assistant News Editor.

This position will involve vetting, assigning and editing news stories of national interest – whether they involve politics, crime, deep investigations or any other major issue in the news cycle. You will work hand in hand with our national editor and our crack team of reporters.

We’re looking for someone with a proven track record of delivering timely stories while adhering to the highest journalistic standards of sourcing and accuracy. The ideal candidate is someone who is able to thrive in a highly competitive atmosphere while juggling multiple reporters and stories and rolling deadlines for our print newspaper.

The schedule is flexible but will include Sunday 10am - 6pm EST.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with our national editor and reporters on hard-hitting stories that only The Post can deliver
  • Conduct strong edits on stories while ensuring you are maintaining The Post’s signature voice
  • Assign and even pitch stories of national interest

The ideal candidate will have/be:

  • At least 5 years of experience in a major metropolitan or national newsroom.
  • Experience leading a team of at least five reporters in a newsroom environment

  • Strong news judgement and editing chops
  • A voracious consumer of news in all areas
  • Experience editing multiple stories a day and turning them around quickly for both print and digital audiences
  • A fiercely competitive spirit
  • Flexibility in working weekend or later night shifts
  • Understanding of SEO, social media and video best practices and how to utilize those resources to optimize content and reach a wide audience a plus
  • Experience working in print production a plus

Note: This position will be required to come on‑site at least three days a week to our Midtown newsroom.

Please note that this is an engagement facilitated through a third‑party vendor. While the role supports The New York Post, employment and payroll will be managed by the vendor.
