What is a Weekend QA?

A Weekend QA (Quality Assurance) job typically involves testing software, applications, or products during weekends to ensure they meet quality standards. Weekend QA professionals work part-time or on a contract basis, performing tasks such as identifying bugs, running test cases, and reporting issues to the development team. This role is common in industries requiring continuous testing, such as software development, gaming, and e-commerce. It helps companies maintain quality without disrupting weekday workflows.

What are the typical responsibilities and work patterns for a Weekend QA?

As a Weekend QA, your primary responsibilities include executing test cases, identifying and documenting defects, and collaborating with development teams to ensure product quality during weekend releases or maintenance windows. You may work independently or as part of a smaller weekend shift team, often communicating with colleagues through project management tools and virtual meetings. The role typically requires flexibility in hours, as coverage is needed outside the standard work week, but this can offer a better work-life balance for some professionals. Additionally, Weekend QA work is valuable for those seeking exposure to critical deployments, fast-paced troubleshooting, and unique scenarios not encountered during regular business hours. This experience can help build expertise and open doors to more advanced QA roles in the future.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Weekend QA position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Weekend QA, you need a solid understanding of software testing principles, keen attention to detail, and experience with bug tracking and test case management. Familiarity with automation tools like Selenium, JIRA, and basic scripting languages, as well as ISTQB certification, are often beneficial. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability help Weekend QAs collaborate effectively across distributed teams and manage shifting priorities. These competencies ensure thorough product testing, quick issue resolution, and help maintain software quality during weekend release cycles.

Job description

Role: Associate QA Engineer
Location: New York, NY (Hybrid)
Type: Full Time - Contract

About the Role
We are seeking a motivated Associate QA Engineer with experience in software testing, automation, and API validation to help ensure the quality and reliability of our digital products. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with modern testing frameworks such as Playwright, Cypress, Robot Framework, or similar tools, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with product managers, developers, and cross-functional teams to validate new features, design effective test strategies, and support the release process. You will be responsible for creating test plans, building regression test suites, and contributing to automated testing frameworks to improve product quality and release confidence.

The position requires experience with API testing, Python-based automation, and working with SQL/NoSQL databases, along with familiarity with cloud environments (preferably Google Cloud Platform), Agile development practices, and tools such as Azure DevOps or Jira. You will play a key role in strengthening the testing process, identifying potential issues early, and helping deliver high-quality software solutions to our customers.

Responsibilities:
  • Participate in and improve the whole lifecycle of services—from inception and design, through deployment, operation, and refinement.
  • Participate in the release planning process to review functional specifications and create release plans.
  • Collaborate with software engineers to design verification test plans.
  • Design regression test suites and review with engineering, applications, and the field organization.
  • Produce regular reports on the status and quality of software releases and be prepared to speak to findings in an informative way to all levels of the audience.
  • Design and implement a test automation strategy for multiple product development teams at the onset of the project.
  • Develop and contribute to a culture of high performance, transparency, and continuous improvement as it relates to the infrastructure services and streamlining of the development pipeline.
  • Participate in a diverse team of talented engineers globally, providing guidance, support, and clear priorities.

What We are Looking For:
  • Minimum of 6 years of Quality Engineering experience (required)
  • Hands-on experience with at least 2 of the leading testing tools/frameworks like Playwright or Cypress, Robot Framework, JMeter, Rest Assured.
  • Hands-on experience working on Python.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to solve complex technical problems (required)
  • API testing - understanding of RESTful design and best practices.
  • Hands-on experience testing APIs - both with and without automation tools.
  • Experience working on SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience working on Cloud Technologies, preferably Google Cloud Platform (Google Cloud Platform).
  • Experience with Agile Software Development methodologies and practices
  • Experience with performance testing and tools like JMeter, Locust.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps or Jira, or another similar issue/bug tracking system
  • Experience working in an Agile software development organization
  • Ability to think abstract – to ensure the ability to not conform to the norm. Norms do not find bugs quickly, Ability to work in an advisory capacity to identify key technical and business problems, develop and evaluate
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
