What are some common challenges faced by Weekend Python Data Analysts, and how can they be managed?

Weekend Python Data Analysts often face challenges such as limited time to access stakeholders or full datasets, since many team members may not be available outside standard business hours. To manage these challenges, it’s important to communicate needs and data access requirements ahead of time, and to document findings thoroughly for seamless handovers. Being self-sufficient with Python tools and data wrangling is critical, as you may need to troubleshoot issues independently. Proactively setting clear goals for each shift can also help maximize productivity during weekend hours.

What are Weekend Python Data Analysts?

Weekend Python Data Analysts are professionals who work part-time or on weekends to analyze data using Python programming. Their expertise in Python enables them to efficiently manipulate large datasets and extract actionable insights. This role is ideal for those seeking flexible work arrangements or supplementary income in the data analytics field.

Job description

Build the data foundation of a growing specialty insurer

Optiom is a Canadian specialty insurance Managing General Agency (MGA), backed by Aviva Canada, delivering vehicle protection through a national network of dealers and brokers. We're investing in a modern, governed data platform - one where our customers and partners are understood in one place, and every policy, claim, call and service event connects back to them.

We're looking for a hands-on Manager, Data Architecture to lead our data analytics and data management functions and build that foundation with us. Reporting to the Director, Execution Office, you'll own the data model, the governed cloud data platform, and the analytics and reporting the whole business relies on - across all three of our brands.

This is a build-and-scale role for someone who wants to shape a data function from the model outward: establish the governance and quality that make the numbers reconcile, and turn a fragmented data landscape into a single, trusted source of truth.

What you'll do

  • Design and maintain our target data architecture - a governed cloud data platform (Snowflake) and curated data products such as Customer 360 and Partner 360.
  • Lead the data management function - master data management, data quality, governance, lineage and retention - so the numbers leadership reviews agree across sales, claims, finance and service.
  • Lead the analytics and BI function - deliver trusted, self-serve Power BI reporting for Sales, Claims, Operations, Finance and Service.
  • Define the data models and integration patterns that connect our core insurance, CRM and contact-centre systems through consistent, governed data contracts.
  • Partner across the business to translate questions into governed data products, and enable forecasting, retention analytics and AI-ready data.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship, and build internal data capability.

What you bring

  • 6+ years in data architecture, data engineering, or analytics leadership, including hands-on data modelling (dimensional and semantic) - not solely dashboard production.
  • Ownership of a modern cloud data platform (Snowflake strongly preferred; Azure or AWS equivalents considered) and current ELT / transformation practices.
  • Proven delivery of enterprise business intelligence (Power BI preferred) to senior leadership.
  • Experience establishing data governance, MDM and data quality controls in a regulated environment.
  • Strong SQL; Python an asset.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data / Information Management, Engineering, Statistics or a related field - or equivalent demonstrable experience.
  • A clear communicator who can translate between technical and business audiences.

Bonus points for

  • Insurance, financial services, MGA, warranty or premium-financing data experience.
  • Snowflake with dbt, Microsoft Fabric, or Azure Data Services.
  • Certifications such as DP-600, PL-300, SnowPro, CDMP (DAMA) or TOGAF.
  • Familiarity with API-gateway integration, canonical data contracts, and contact-centre data (e.g., Amazon Connect).
  • Privacy and AML data-handling exposure (PIPEDA, FINTRAC).

Who we are

Optiom Inc. is a specialty vehicle replacement insurance MGA and a wholly owned subsidiary of Aviva Canada. Originating in British Columbia in 2008 and now headquartered in Calgary, we deliver dependable protection through a national network of more than 330 dealerships and 900 broker offices, with over 600,000 policies sold to date. We pair the entrepreneurial energy of a specialty MGA with the strength and credibility of one of Canada's largest and most trusted insurers.

Why you'll want to join

  • Backed by Aviva Canada - enterprise-level resources in an entrepreneurial setting.
  • Own the data foundation behind our shift to a customer- and partner-centric way of operating.
  • Build-and-scale mandate across three brands and a national dealer and broker network.
  • Specialty niche - deep expertise in Canadian specialty vehicle-warranty insurance and premium financing.
  • Growth toward senior data and architecture leadership.
  • Employer-supported certifications and professional development.
  • Hybrid work model based in our Calgary office (open to Calgary-based candidates only).

Compensation & benefits

  • Base salary: $120,000-$15,000, commensurate with experience and certification level
  • Annual performance bonus: 10-15% of base
  • Comprehensive group benefits - medical, dental, vision, and EAP
  • Three weeks' vacation to start, increasing with tenure
  • Employer-supported professional development and certifications
