Job Description:
The Programmer/Research Analyst will support research initiatives using large-scale healthcare data sources, including Medicare, Medicaid, SEER, NHANES, Optum, and electronic medical records. Working within the Hollings Cancer Center (HCC) and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), this role contributes to federally funded projects supported by the National Cancer Institute and the National Library of Medicine, with a focus on cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship.
This position requires advanced technical expertise and the ability to independently design, implement, and optimize analytic workflows. The analyst will architect and maintain high-performance analytic datasets; develop reproducible, scalable pipelines; and implement sophisticated computational methods that support effectiveness and cost-effectiveness studies, precision public health research, and health services research. The role also offers opportunities to contribute to multidisciplinary projects involving mixed-methods research and the application of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) to clinical and population-based datasets.
Key responsibilities include developing high-quality, well-documented code; supporting manuscript-ready analyses; contributing to presentations at national and international conferences; and participating in collaborative research teams. Team members are encouraged to pursue career development opportunities, with strong support from mentors and dedicated staff at HCC and MUSC.
Job Duties:
• Build and maintain analytic datasets and data pipelines
Design, implement, and document reproducible, scalable workflows for assembling large-scale healthcare datasets used in real-world evidence generation and oncology research. Percentage time allocation: 30%
• Develop statistical and computational code for analyses and modeling
Write efficient, well-structured code to support effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and health services research, including model implementation and validation. Percentage time allocation: 25%
• Perform data integration, cleaning, and transformation
Integrate heterogeneous data sources (claims, EMR, registry, survey data), conduct rigorous data quality checks, and prepare analysis-ready datasets for complex study designs. Percentage time allocation: 20%
• Conduct descriptive and exploratory analyses
Generate summary statistics, visualizations, and preliminary findings to guide study design and analytic decisions. Percentage time allocation: 15%
• Conduct literature reviews and support research synthesis
Review and summarize scientific literature related to cancer prevention and control, population health, social determinants of health, health disparities, and related topics. Percentage time allocation: 10%
MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:
A bachelor's degree and one year professional experience involving the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of quantified data. A master's degree in statistics may be substituted for the required work experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree (minimum) in health informatics, data science, health services research, biostatistics, epidemiology, or a related quantitative field.
- Mis- to advanced-level proficiency in programming with SAS, SQL, Python, R, or Stata, with demonstrated experience building, optimizing, and managing large analytic datasets and reproducible pipelines.
- Documented experience working with administrative claims data or other large-scale healthcare datasets, including data linkage, longitudinal cohort construction, and advanced data quality assessment.
- Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse research team.
