What You Will Do
Come join one of the many teams within Plutonium Supply and Disposition (PSD) Division, where you will be working at the Plutonium Center of Excellence located in Northern New Mexico at Los Alamos National Laboratory! PSD is a division with the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP)/Nuclear Production Operations (NPO) directorship. We are confident that you will find the PSD Division a dynamic and rewarding place to work. The PSD Division provides plutonium pit related products and services of superior quality and value to protect our nation.
You will work in a team environment within LANL's nuclear facility to manufacture product, support material movement and support glove box operations. The majority of daily work is "hands-on" glove box work in support of plutonium processing. Processes at Los Alamos National Lab are performed using detailed operating procedures and work requires extensive knowledge and expertise following Conduct of Operations, nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability, radiological safety, and environmental compliance requirements. Work will be related to national security objectives, requiring the individual to hold a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP).
As a Research Tec 4, you will perform and lead production work related to certain plutonium metal manufacturing processes and provide technical support for related activities, including equipment repair and maintenance, manufacturing research, production optimization, process development, and waste handling. Your specific duties may include performing technical glovebox and other radiological work (e.g., nuclear material handling, waste handling) in accordance with formal procedures and the LANL Conduct of Operations program, as well as serving as a person-in-charge for such activities. Your work will involve a very high level of responsibility for safety and security as you work with chemicals, radioactive materials, fissile material, and ionizing radiation. Your work will be directly related to national security objectives, requiring you to protect and maintain sensitive and classified information.

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Qualified in at least one pyrochemical operations process (i.e., direct oxide reduction, electrorefining, molten salt extraction, metal chlorination, plutonium coalescence and oxidation).
  • Qualified as a person-in-charge for plutonium facility process work.
  • Demonstrated experience in executing plutonium facility work safely and in accordance with the LANL conduct of operations program.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring and training junior team members in applicable process work.
  • Ability to obtain Department of Energy Q-Cleared.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Reading vision, ability to speak, ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 Hz), sitting, standing, walking, crouching, reaching, use of both arms, applying torque with hands/arms, gripping with hands, and lifting 30+ pounds.
Work Environment: Work occurs primarily in a glovebox environment near sources of ionizing radiation. PPE used includes eye protection, gloves, protective coveralls and shoe covers, and occasional respirator.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 2 years.
