Job description

Position Summary

The Head Athletic Trainer is responsible for overseeing all aspects of athletic training services for the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program. This position provides leadership in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of student-athlete injuries while ensuring compliance with institutional, conference, and governing body regulations. The Head Athletic Trainer plays a critical role in promoting the health, safety, and well-being of all student-athletes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive athletic training services, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation.
  • Develop and implement emergency action plans and ensure proper medical coverage for all practices and competitions.
  • Supervise and coordinate care for all student-athletes in collaboration with team physicians and healthcare providers.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential medical records in compliance with HIPAA and institutional policies.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the athletic training facility, including scheduling, inventory, and equipment maintenance.
  • Hire, train, and supervise assistant athletic trainers, interns, and student workers.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between athletics, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Educate student-athletes on injury prevention, nutrition, and overall wellness.
  • Ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, and institutional rules and regulations.
  • Manage the athletic training budget, including supplies and equipment procurement.
  • Coordinate insurance claims and assist with injury-related documentation.
  • Provide input on policies and procedures related to student-athlete health and safety.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree required, master’s degree in athletic training, Sports Medicine, or related field preferred.
  • BOC (Board of Certification) certification required.
  • Current state licensure or eligibility for licensure.
  • CPR/AED certification required.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising staff and managing an athletic training program.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record systems.
  • Experience working with diverse student-athlete populations.

Work Environment

  • Requires evening, weekend, and travel commitments.
  • Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.
  • Physical demands include standing for extended periods, lifting equipment, and assisting injured athletes.
