Weekend Principal Controls Engineer information

What does a Weekend Principal Controls Engineer do?

A Weekend Principal Controls Engineer is a senior-level engineer responsible for overseeing and managing control systems, such as automation and instrumentation, during weekend shifts. Their duties include ensuring the reliability and performance of control systems, troubleshooting issues, leading maintenance or upgrade projects, and mentoring other engineers or technicians. They play a key role in maintaining operational efficiency and safety, especially during non-standard work hours when issues may arise. Typically, they work in industries like manufacturing, energy, or process plants that require continuous operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Principal Controls Engineer?

To thrive as a Weekend Principal Controls Engineer, you need deep expertise in automation, control systems engineering, and a relevant engineering degree, often supported by extensive industry experience. Proficiency with PLC programming, SCADA systems, industrial network protocols, and certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) or ISA CAP are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, leadership, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for coordinating projects and troubleshooting under time constraints. These skills and qualifications are vital for ensuring reliable system performance and efficient operations during critical weekend shifts.

What are the unique challenges and benefits of working as a Weekend Principal Controls Engineer compared to a standard weekday schedule?

Working as a Weekend Principal Controls Engineer often involves overseeing critical maintenance, troubleshooting, and upgrades when production is paused or at reduced capacity. This allows for more hands-on involvement with equipment and fewer interruptions from regular operations. However, it can also mean working independently or with a smaller team, requiring strong problem-solving skills and self-sufficiency. The role typically offers a quieter work environment and may come with premium pay or additional flexibility, but it’s important to be comfortable with less direct management support and off-hour responsibilities.

Job description

Leads the design and delivery of AI-native developer platforms, services, and workflows that improve how OCI teams build and operate software across the full software development lifecycle. Applies strong software engineering and distributed-systems expertise to integrate AI-assisted development, automated testing and evaluation, intelligent operations, and secure delivery practices at scale. Partners across teams to establish reusable patterns, measurable outcomes, and safe adoption paths that help OCI engineers build, test, deploy, operate, and evolve services more effectively.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and development of AI-native developer platforms, services, APIs, tools, and workflows that improve the software development lifecycle for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure engineering teams.
  • Deliver complex capabilities end to end: requirements clarification, technical design, implementation, automated testing and evaluation, deployment, operational support, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner across OCI engineering, product, security, and infrastructure teams to identify developer pain points and evolve them into scalable, reliable platform capabilities and shared engineering practices.
  • Provide technical leadership through architecture and code reviews, design guidance, and mentorship; raise engineering standards across testing, CI/CD, observability, security, compatibility, and operational readiness.
  • Define reusable patterns and safe adoption paths for AI-assisted coding, code review, test generation, debugging, incident investigation, and operational automation.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex cross-service and developer-workflow issues; drive durable fixes, resilience improvements, and follow-up actions.
  • Establish and maintain documentation, technical standards, runbooks, migration guides, and adoption playbooks that enable consistent platform use at scale.

AI-First Engineering Expectations
  • Lead the practical application of AI-assisted engineering techniques and tools to improve developer productivity, software quality, and operational effectiveness-including faster prototyping, stronger test coverage, safer refactoring, better documentation, and more effective incident response.
  • Apply an AI-native engineering mindset across day-to-day work: build and validate AI-enabled workflows, develop evaluation and quality measures, improve observability and runbooks, and rethink how OCI teams build, test, deploy, operate, and evolve software.
  • Establish responsible AI engineering practices, including appropriate evaluation, observability, security, privacy protections, quality controls, and human oversight.
  • Coach and guide other engineers in effective AI-native development practices while maintaining strong software engineering fundamentals.

Minimum Qualifications
  • BS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong proficiency in Java and experience designing and building REST and/or gRPC services.
  • Experience building scalable distributed systems, including backend services and developer-facing platforms, tools, or web applications.
  • Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and distributed-systems fundamentals.
  • Working knowledge of data stores, including RDBMS and/or NoSQL systems.
  • Experience with modern engineering practices, including source control, code review, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and operational support.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical work across teams, influence technical decisions, and mentor other engineers.
  • Strong troubleshooting, performance analysis, and systems-design skills.
