Weekend Principal Controls Engineer information

What does a Weekend Principal Controls Engineer do?

A Weekend Principal Controls Engineer is a senior-level engineer responsible for overseeing and managing control systems, such as automation and instrumentation, during weekend shifts. Their duties include ensuring the reliability and performance of control systems, troubleshooting issues, leading maintenance or upgrade projects, and mentoring other engineers or technicians. They play a key role in maintaining operational efficiency and safety, especially during non-standard work hours when issues may arise. Typically, they work in industries like manufacturing, energy, or process plants that require continuous operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Principal Controls Engineer?

To thrive as a Weekend Principal Controls Engineer, you need deep expertise in automation, control systems engineering, and a relevant engineering degree, often supported by extensive industry experience. Proficiency with PLC programming, SCADA systems, industrial network protocols, and certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) or ISA CAP are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, leadership, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for coordinating projects and troubleshooting under time constraints. These skills and qualifications are vital for ensuring reliable system performance and efficient operations during critical weekend shifts.

What are the unique challenges and benefits of working as a Weekend Principal Controls Engineer compared to a standard weekday schedule?

Working as a Weekend Principal Controls Engineer often involves overseeing critical maintenance, troubleshooting, and upgrades when production is paused or at reduced capacity. This allows for more hands-on involvement with equipment and fewer interruptions from regular operations. However, it can also mean working independently or with a smaller team, requiring strong problem-solving skills and self-sufficiency. The role typically offers a quieter work environment and may come with premium pay or additional flexibility, but it’s important to be comfortable with less direct management support and off-hour responsibilities.

What is the difference between Weekend Principal Controls Engineer vs Weekend Controls Engineer?

Job description

Required to be in Nashville, TN.

OCI is transforming the developer platform experience. We are building an all-new application deployment system that will become a critical foundation for how developers build, validate, release, operate, and evolve services on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. This is a rare opportunity to shape a greenfield platform with broad customer impact and a direct role in OCI's next phase of growth.

As a Principal Software Development Engineer, you will define and drive the technical direction for reliable, secure, and delightful deployment capabilities across the OCI Developer Platform. You will align teams around durable platform primitives, remove systemic barriers to developer velocity, and establish industry-leading foundations for the rapid adoption of agentic engineering-without compromising the safety, governance, or reliability of our systems.

This is a high-leverage Principal engineering role at the intersection of developer productivity, cloud reliability, and the future of software delivery. You will shape a platform that enables OCI teams and customers to deliver value more quickly and safely, while establishing a durable technical standard for trustworthy agentic engineering at cloud scale.

Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 8+ years of professional software development experience, including a record of leading the design and delivery of production-quality distributed systems, platform services, or developer tools.

  • Strong programming skills in one or more modern languages such as Java, Go, C++, C#, Python, or similar.

  • Deep experience designing APIs, data models, and service architectures with attention to scalability, availability, security, operability, and long-term evolution.

  • Solid understanding of cloud-native systems, including containers, orchestration, CI/CD, infrastructure automation, or release engineering concepts.

  • Demonstrated technical leadership and ownership: you can define strategy, align stakeholders, drive execution across teams, and remain accountable for outcomes in production.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions and build alignment across engineering disciplines and organizational boundaries.

Preferred qualifications: Experience in one or more of the following areas is a plus.

  • Application deployment platforms, continuous delivery, GitOps, artifact management, or developer platform engineering.

  • Large-scale distributed systems, multi-tenant cloud services, control planes, workflow orchestration, or platform architecture.

  • Site reliability engineering, production incident response, observability, capacity planning, or performance engineering at scale.

  • Security engineering, identity and access management, policy-as-code, supply-chain security, or compliance automation.

  • AI-assisted developer tools, agentic workflows, or the design of safety controls and governance for autonomous or semi-autonomous systems.
