Weekend Pmhnp information

What is a Weekend PMHNP?

A Weekend PMHNP (Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner) job involves providing mental health care on weekends, often in hospitals, clinics, or telehealth settings. Responsibilities include assessing patients, diagnosing mental health conditions, prescribing medications, and developing treatment plans. These roles are ideal for NPs seeking flexible schedules or additional income while delivering essential psychiatric care outside of standard business hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend PMHNP?

To thrive as a Weekend PMHNP, you need advanced psychiatric assessment skills, strong clinical decision-making abilities, and current state licensure as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, telepsychiatry platforms, and prescribing protocols is typically required. Exceptional communication, resilience, and the ability to work independently make a candidate stand out in weekend or off-hours coverage. These skills ensure you can provide safe, effective mental health care when resources may be limited and urgent patient needs arise.

What are some unique aspects or challenges of working as a Weekend PMHNP compared to weekday shifts?

As a Weekend PMHNP, you may encounter higher patient acuity or more urgent cases, as people often delay seeking psychiatric care until the weekend. Staffing is typically leaner on weekends, so you’ll have more autonomy and may need to make critical decisions with less immediate support from a full interdisciplinary team. Flexibility is important as you might handle a wider variety of cases, ranging from acute crisis interventions to routine med management. This schedule can also offer better work-life balance for those seeking fewer weekdays or specific shift structures.

Job description

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) - Part-Time, Autonomous Practice
Remote • Active Virginia PMHNP License Required • Independent Practice Only
We're looking for a part-time PMHNP in Virginia who can practice autonomously and wants to do it within a team that actually collaborates.
Backpack Healthcare provides mental health care for children, teens, and young adults - all online, covered by most insurance. We're clinician-led and minority-owned, and Virginia's autonomous practice environment means we're looking specifically for PMHNPs who can practice independently - no MD collaboration agreement required.
You'll still be part of an integrated care team alongside therapists, psychiatrists, and care coordinators. Autonomous doesn't mean alone. It means you bring the full scope - and we build around it.
What this role looks like
You'll carry a part-time caseload providing comprehensive psychiatric care to children, teens, and young adults via telehealth. Afternoon, evening, and weekend availability is required - that's when families can actually show up.
Day-to-day you'll:
  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and formulate evidence-based diagnoses
  • Develop individualized treatment plans in partnership with patients and their families
  • Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications, monitor effectiveness, and adjust as needed
  • Provide brief supportive interventions and psychoeducation alongside medication management
  • Collaborate with therapists, psychiatrists, and care coordinators in regular case reviews
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation in our EHR
  • Educate families about diagnoses, treatment options, and what to expect

What we offer
  • Competitive fee-for-service per-session pay
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Medical, dental, and vision (for eligible team members)
  • PTO based on employment status
  • CEU reimbursement
  • Clinical mentorship and case consultation - new graduates are welcome
  • A collaborative team that treats integrated care as the standard, not the exception

What we're looking for
  • Active, unrestricted Virginia PMHNP license (multi-state or compact preferred)
  • Ability to practice independently without an MD collaboration agreement - required
  • PMHNP-BC board certification
  • Active DEA license
  • Master's or doctoral degree from an accredited PMHNP program
  • Experience with or strong interest in working with youth and families
  • Comfortable working independently in a telehealth environment
  • Strong clinical judgment, clear communication, and genuine empathy

Who we are
We've served 12,000+ kids and families since 2020. 78% of families report their child is doing better after three months. We built Backpack because the old model wasn't working - for kids or for the clinicians trying to help them.
When clinicians thrive, kids thrive. That's not a tagline. It's how we build.
Backpack Healthcare is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We celebrate diversity in age, background, identity, and experience - and we mean it.
