What is a Weekend PMHNP?

A Weekend PMHNP (Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner) job involves providing mental health care on weekends, often in hospitals, clinics, or telehealth settings. Responsibilities include assessing patients, diagnosing mental health conditions, prescribing medications, and developing treatment plans. These roles are ideal for NPs seeking flexible schedules or additional income while delivering essential psychiatric care outside of standard business hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend PMHNP?

To thrive as a Weekend PMHNP, you need advanced psychiatric assessment skills, strong clinical decision-making abilities, and current state licensure as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, telepsychiatry platforms, and prescribing protocols is typically required. Exceptional communication, resilience, and the ability to work independently make a candidate stand out in weekend or off-hours coverage. These skills ensure you can provide safe, effective mental health care when resources may be limited and urgent patient needs arise.

What are some unique aspects or challenges of working as a Weekend PMHNP compared to weekday shifts?

As a Weekend PMHNP, you may encounter higher patient acuity or more urgent cases, as people often delay seeking psychiatric care until the weekend. Staffing is typically leaner on weekends, so you’ll have more autonomy and may need to make critical decisions with less immediate support from a full interdisciplinary team. Flexibility is important as you might handle a wider variety of cases, ranging from acute crisis interventions to routine med management. This schedule can also offer better work-life balance for those seeking fewer weekdays or specific shift structures.

Job description

Empowering communities through accessible, inclusive, and compassionate care, this is the work we do every day.

At Jane Pauley Community Health Center, every role is connected to something bigger. As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), we deliver integrated, whole-person care to individuals and families across Indiana, regardless of income or insurance status.

Our teams work at the intersection of clinical excellence and community impact, supporting underserved populations while building a culture rooted in collaboration, respect, and growth. Here, you are not just joining a workplace, you are becoming part of a mission that truly matters.

The Pediatric Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) delivers comprehensive, evidence-based behavioral health services within a collaborative, team-based model. This role is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with mental health concerns who are being seen in a clinical environment. The PMHNP works closely with primary care providers, therapists, leadership, and care teams to support whole-person health, reduce stigma, and improve access to mental health services within the medical home. Providers will have to float between sites to cover for other providers when appropriate.

This role is in a pediatric clinic supporting child and adolescent patients. Applicant must have 3-5 years of experience in pediatric care working with children 3 years and older.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Essential duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Conducting comprehensive mental health evaluations including history, symptom review, and mental status examinations.
  • Diagnosing mental health conditions using DSM-5 criteria and developing integrated, patient-centered treatment plans.
  • Initiating and managing psychopharmacologic treatment, monitoring therapeutic effectiveness and side effects.
  • Collaborating daily with school-based team members, primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, behavioral health consultants, and other team members to ensure coordinated care.
  • Providing brief therapeutic interventions (e.g., motivational interviewing, solution-focused therapy) and psychoeducation as appropriate within scope.
  • Supporting same-day access and warm handoffs from primary care providers and school providers for timely mental health consultation.
  • Educating patients and families on mental health conditions, treatment options, and self-care strategies within a culturally responsive framework.
  • Participating in team huddles, case reviews, and shared care planning to support integrated workflows and population health initiatives.
  • Documenting care in the shared electronic health record in alignment with organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of wellness and prevention programs addressing behavioral health in primary care.
  • Engaging in quality improvement projects and data collection related to access, outcomes, and patient satisfaction.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of evidence-based psychiatric practices, integrated care models, and state and federal healthcare regulations.

Qualifications:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and Experience:

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a specialization in psychiatric-mental health.
  • Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC).
  • Current and unrestricted Indiana RN and APRN licenses.
  • Valid Indiana CSR and DEA registration with ability to prescribe psychiatric medications.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Experience in child and adolescent care.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and time-management skills required.

Computer Skills:

  • Proficiency in using electronic medical records, especially in a shared care model.
  • Competency with Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
Why You’ll Love Working Here
  • Purpose-driven work that directly impacts access to care across our communities
  • Robust benefits package (medical, dental, vision) designed to support you and your family
  • Generous PTO because we believe caring for others starts with caring for yourself
  • 401(k) with employer contribution to help you plan for what’s ahead
  • Life and disability coverage for peace of mind

Here, you are not just filling a role—you are helping shape healthier communities and advancing equitable care every day!
