Job Title:
Full-time External Organizer (Salaried Position)
Office Location: South St. Paul, MN
JOB SUMMARY:
The External Organizer is responsible for implementing organizing campaigns, developing leaders, mobilizing members, and supporting communications and outreach efforts. The role requires long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with some travel that may include overnight stays.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop organizing committees and lead members during organizing drives.
- Assist with internal and external communications, including newsletters, campaign flyers, and outreach materials.
- Conduct research, list building, data entry, charting, mapping, and event calendars.
- Communicate with members through house visits, phone calls, site visits, and literature.
- Plan and execute strategies to counter employer anti-union campaigns.
- File election petitions and assist in hearings with MN Bureau of Mediation or NLRB.
- Assess, move, and test members’ engagement levels.
- Gather, analyze, and present data to support campaigns.
- Mobilize workers around union issues, contracts, and political actions.
- Educate members on union rights and contracts.
- Collaborating with community groups to advance contracts and community campaigns.
- All duties as assigned
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Ability to establish rapport with diverse ethnic, social, and economic groups.
- Strong judgment and prioritization skills.
- Knowledge of labor rights and contract language, or ability to learn quickly.
- Willingness to work long, irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to maintain files and comply with administrative reporting.
- Experience as a union staff member in organizing or representational assignments preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Email, Social Media, Internet and Databases.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Two or more years of related public sector labor union experience preferred; school district experience and SEIU activism helpful.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and vehicle in good working condition. Must have and maintain auto liability insurance coverage of $100,000 per person. $300,000 per accident.
