Part-Time Bus Driver

Location: Transportation Department

Open To: Employees of Carson City School District and external applicants.

Salary & Benefits: Hourly rate of $20.40 with no benefits. Employee works on an on-call basis only. Cannot exceed 760 hours in a school year (September - August). Bilingual preferred.

Job Title: Part-Time Bus Driver

Location: Transportation Department

General Job Description: Under general supervision operates a school bus and/or other passenger vehicle on a substitute basis; arranges bus schedule relief driving; assists in the maintenance and setting up of bus routes; assists in the training of new bus drivers; to perform simple bus maintenance, as required; work hours are flexible and may vary dependent upon department needs; and to perform related work as required.

Experience or training required: Knowledge of: Provisions of the Nevada Motor Vehicle Code and the Nevada Educational Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in transporting students and other passengers; system-wide routes and schedules; operation of a school bus and passenger vehicles; detailed record keeping; appropriate safety precautions and procedures. Ability to: Maintain vehicles in a clean and safe condition; maintains detailed records as required; monitor routes and schedules responding to uncovered routes; monitors student passengers' behavior and responds within general guidelines; performs first aid as required; operates vehicles maintaining and observing legal and defensive driving practices; understand, carry out and communicate detailed oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective proactive relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Any combination of training, education, and experience, which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position: A typical qualifying entrance background is completion of training in school bus operations with two (2) years of experience driving a school bus or equivalent experience and longevity performing bus driving duties in a related field with the acquired knowledge and abilities listed above.

Licenses or Certificates required: Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent certificate, a valid Nevada Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement, a standard First Aid/CPR Certificate, and an original Social Security Card. Desired would include a Third Party Certification Training Certificate that would enable holders to authorize the driving abilities for licensing purposes as administrated by the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety.

The Job Functions: Positions in this class operate a system wide bus and/or passenger vehicle requiring a knowledge of all routes and the ability to drive a variety of buses and vehicles. Positions in this class are distinguished from those of a Bus Driver by the greater knowledge, responsibility and initiative required to monitor schedule coverage to insure all routes and needs are met. Positions in this class perform work which has some variation and which allows or requires a limited range of choice in the coverage of schedules and routes. Incumbents receive little instruction and have considerable latitude in distributing routes. Incumbents are expected to refer matters which are unusual or out of normal to their supervisor for instruction.

Essential Job Functions: Drives a district bus or passenger vehicle, transporting students and other passengers as authorized; monitors the calendar, keyboard and communicates with the bus drivers and office personnel to insure all routes and needs are met; works cooperatively and proactively with peers to distribute uncovered routes; refers uncovered routes and needs to their supervisor when they exceed the ability of the incumbents to cover; monitors and controls student behavior while riding on the school bus using set, established and documented procedures; communicates with school authorities and parents regarding student behavior; assists students as necessary when boarding or exiting a school bus and/or passenger vehicle; assists passengers as necessary crossing streets adjacent to bus stops; conducts and trains bus drivers for the required emergency evacuation drills; studies route maps and changes to maintain knowledge of the system and to provide decision making input; transports students and other passengers to various locations, choosing the best route making departure and arrival times as scheduled; prior to operation, inspects vehicles for safety purposes and reports any deficiencies; drains air brakes and insures cleanliness of vehicle after use; keeps detailed records and reports as required; may assist with driver training; will assist in standard training; performs minor vehicle maintenance; operates District buses and passenger vehicles; this position is not eligible for field trips; and performs related work as required.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Strength: Heavy Work - Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Incumbent must be in good physical condition and must take a periodic physical examination. May work in conditions of dust, fumes, gas, odors, heat and cold. Must report to work on campus/assigned site.

Hourly Rate: - $20.40/hr.
