Job description

UPMC Vision Institute is hiring an Ophthalmic Imager to support our Tarentum location at 303 E. 10th Ave., Tarentum, PA 15084. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented professional who enjoys working in a fast-paced ophthalmology practice and providing exceptional patient care. The Ophthalmic Imager is responsible for performing a variety of ophthalmic imaging procedures, maintaining accurate patient records, preparing patients for testing, and collaborating with providers to support quality patient outcomes. Typical hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with no weekends; however, employees may occasionally start as early as 7:00 a.m. or work until 5:00 p.m. when assigned opening or closing responsibilities, which are rotated among staff. Travel is required to support additional Vision Institute locations, including Natrona Heights, Monroeville, Wexford, St. Margaret, Oakland, Shadyside, and Mercy, offering the opportunity to work with a diverse patient population across multiple sites.
Responsibilities:
  • Perform a variety of highly skilled duties associated with the operation of specialized equipment to assist physicians in documenting, diagnosing, and treating diseases of the eye, including color fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, OCT angiography, retinal thickness analysis, slit lamp and goniophotography, visual field testing, external photos, and a-scans.
  • Reviews physician?s orders and patient?s medical history and allergies in Epic prior to performing imaging and photography.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and condition of the patients serviced in the department. Provides for care and/or extends services as described in department policies and procedures.
  • Explain imaging procedures to patient and provides instruction during imaging.
  • Perform optical coherence tomography and ocular digital photography using different makes and manufacturers in accordance with protocols.
  • Perform visual field assessment using the automated Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer in accordance with protocols.
  • Access and review previous patient notes within Epic.
  • Recognize problems or malfunctions of photographic, diagnostic, and related equipment versus patient media opacities. May assist in making minor adjustments and perform preventive maintenance in accordance with established procedures. Advises supervisor of malfunctions or problems affecting the accuracy and quality of scans or images requiring repair by vendor.
  • Recognize and help rectify issues with image import into Forum, image archiving and storage and managing duplicate patients, including contacting IT/Forum group as required.
  • Maintain adequate levels of supplies for imaging department and notifies supervisor of supplies needing to be ordered.
  • Participates in the collection of patient history and complete ocular workup such as visual acuity, ocular history, vital signs, intraocular pressure, and records results in patient record.
  • Ophthalmic imaging procedures which may include but are not limited to OCT, Anterior OCT, HRT, Color fundus photos, corneal topography, visual fields, a-scans, b-scans, external photos.
  • Ophthalmic procedures / assessments including but not limited to visual acuity tests and instilling eye drops in accordance with established approved protocols for patient safety.
  • Ability to edit and transfer images from digital camera to the patient database in Forum and Epic.
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy of the eye and ophthalmic disease processes.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years of ophthalmic experience required.
    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    Valid CPR certification
  • Act 34 with renewal
