Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Shop Foreman, the Diesel Bus Technician performs a variety of maintenance and repair tasks on company-owned buses and their operating systems. The role focuses on preventative maintenance, multi-point safety inspections, NYS DOT inspections, and routine mechanical repair work. The right candidate takes pride in clean inspections, accurate paperwork, and the kind of methodical work that keeps a fleet on the road. This is a structured, shop-based role with direct supervision, paperwork discipline, and steady work - ideal for a technician one to several years into their career who wants to grow inside a stable transportation company.
Key Responsibilities
Inspection & Preventative Maintenance
• Perform multi-point safety inspections, including tire tread depth, wear patterns, and brake function.
• Conduct NYS DOT inspections and brake inspections on company vehicles.
• Adjust brakes, replace lights, mirrors, windshield wipers, and other routine maintenance items as scheduled or needed.
• Inspect and test hydraulic system components.
• Lubricate vehicles using lube gun; replace grease fittings as needed.
Repair & Service
• Examine vehicles and consult with the Shop Foreman and other mechanics to determine the nature and extent of damage or malfunction.
• Plan repair procedures using technical manuals, charts, and field experience.
• Drain and replace fluids - oil, transmission, differential, coolant - using proper tools and receptacles.
• Install replacement parts including oil, fuel, and air filters; belts; hoses; caps; bulbs; and lenses.
• Refill radiators with correct water/antifreeze mixture; check and top off all other fluid levels per manufacturer specifications.
• Raise vehicles using hydraulic jacks or hoists to access underside components.
Shop Operations & Documentation
• Accurately and promptly complete checklists and related paperwork for all work performed.
• Maintain shop, tools, and equipment in organized, safe working condition.
• Communicate needed parts or follow-up repairs to the Shop Foreman.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
• High School diploma or equivalent (preferred).
• Minimum one year of experience in automotive, bus, or truck repair.
• Valid New York State driver's license with a good driving record (required for test-driving motor coaches on company property).
• Must own a complete set of hand tools.
• Ability to communicate clearly and fluently in English with drivers, mechanics, parts personnel, vendors, and co-workers.
• Ability to read, interpret, and follow written, verbal, diagrammatic, and schedule-based instructions.
• Working knowledge of fractions, percentages, decimals, ratios, and proportions as applied to mechanical work.
• Working knowledge of hand tools, equipment, machinery, and safe shop work practices.
Preferred Qualifications
• Bus or motorcoach maintenance experience.
• NYS DOT inspection certification or NY State inspector license.
• ASE certifications (T-series Medium/Heavy Truck, School Bus, or Automotive).
• OEM training (Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Allison, etc.).
• Heavy equipment, fabrication, or welding experience.
• Service technician or customer-facing experience.
• CDL (Class A or Class B).
Physical Requirements
• Ability to access any component on a vehicle in any position.
• Ability to use body, tools, or work aids to move, guide, or position objects to accomplish repair tasks.
• Exert 20-50 lbs of force occasionally, 10-25 lbs of force frequently, and up to 10 lbs of force constantly to move objects.
• Exercise considerable judgment in the selection and adjustment of appropriate tools, objects, and materials.
• Ability to inspect various components of the vehicle in shop and outdoor environments.
