Virginia Living Museum is where nature, science, and discovery come to life. For more than six decades, the VLM has inspired curiosity and conservation by connecting people to the natural world through immersive exhibits, native wildlife habitats, outdoor trails, hands-on learning environments, and a state-of-the-art planetarium. Accredited by both the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the American Alliance of Museums, the Museum serves as a regional leader in environmental education and conservation. 


General Statement of Duties

Event Staff is a part time, non-exempt position which can vary depending on events; schedule can be 0 - 30 hours per week on an as-needed basis. This position is responsible for providing operational functions before, during, and after events in a team setting. The employee will assist with site set up, take down, monitoring and enforcement of museum rules. The employee must understand the Museum's desired image and conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. This position recognizes the capacity to achieve greater results by integrating skilled volunteers and leveraging their diverse knowledge and abilities. Event Staff are under the direct supervision of the Sales Manager.


Qualifications

  • Minimum 18 years old
  • A good attitude and professional demeanor when engaging with clients, vendors, and fellow staff
  • Ability to read and follow event forms, and to physically set up and break down events
  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbally and written) 
  • Ability to be proactive, creative, take initiative and operate independently
  • Define and solve problems while dealing with a variety of situations
  • Adaptability, initiative, and follow through

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Have a full understanding of the objectives of the event including assignments, guest needs, and monitoring procedures
  • Assist with Museum operating and closing procedures, including lighting, audio, storage etc.
  • Continually monitor all areas of the Museum (restrooms, gallery, grounds, etc.) to ensure the best representation 
  • Handle safety concerns according to Museum protocol
  • Set up each gallery as per floor plan and event details with materials including, but not limited to, tables, chairs, decor, linens, beverages, food, place cards, and trashcans
  • Build and maintain a professional relationship with clients, guests, vendors and co-workers, assisting with any last minute details or needs
  • Assist with parking lot management, as needed
  • Fully participate in all set ups and tear downs
  • Restore the space after completion of events to ensure the museum is presentable to the public
  • Ensure the safety of the animal collection by monitoring the galleries during events, ensuring food, beverages and catering items stay away from animals and displays
  • Monitor caterers, DJ, photographers and any other vendors involved with each event to ensure they are following Museum policies, including noise level
  • Engage and oversee volunteers in completion of duties
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Must be able to work weekends, evenings and late nights
  • Must be able to hear and speak clearly
  • Physical requirements include medium work, must be able to lift and move 50lbs
  • Must be able stand for extended periods of time and move about on foot to accomplish tasks
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, and utilize repetitive motions
  • Ability to read and follow event forms and physically set up the event
  • The noise/smell level in the work environment is usually moderate to high depending on event or exhibit changes
  • Follow VLM dress code
  • The position is subject to environmental conditions for activities occurring indoors and outdoors
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 50 hours per year (July - June)
