Job Description:

This position generally requires working every other weekend and approximately half of all observed holidays. The museum is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day; therefore, no work is required on those dates.

Work weekends and holidays, manning the Woodcarving and Model Boat Shop. As weekend coordinator, would oversee museum operations. Responsible for the security and safety of the general public, staff and facilities, in charge of the alarm codes and safe combinations, and handles emergency situations and unusual needs of the public.

Essential Job Functions

Explains the activities of the Woodcarving/Model Shop to the general public.

Responsible for overseeing opening and closing of museum buildings, including deactivating and activating alarm systems and locking of buildings at closing.

Responsible for the security of the store and the admissions money, ensuring store/admission money is available for the store and am/pm admission clerks and all moneys are secure in the store safe at the end of the day.

Ensures all scheduled personnel are on duty: including weekend custodian, store clerks, admission clerks, aquarists and exhibit interpreters.

Handles daily "problems" and inquiries from visitors and staff as they occur.

Other Duties

Organizes and maintains the model making and wood carving shop and drafting room.

Assists with museum sponsored Solomons Island Model Boat Club and Southern Maryland Wood Carvers Club.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre-employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions.)

Knowledge of--

  • CMM operations, programs and events, especially safety and security matters.

Ability to--

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Deal effectively with the public.

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)

Training and/or Education:

High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience:

Two years of experience in dealing with the general public.

Licenses or Certificates:

CPR and First Aid desired.

Special Requirements:

None

Physical Demands:

Requires long periods of standing, frequent walking indoors, repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching or reaching; recurring lifting of objects up to 49 pounds.

Unusual Demands:

Required to work weekends and holidays.

FLSA Status:

Nonexempt

Compensation Steps:

Pay rate: $21.00 - $24.07 per hour

Grade 713, part-time position, 7 hours per week
