General Description
The Math Resource Center Tutor assists and tutors students in the OCCC Math Resource Center.
Reports To
Supervisor, Math Resource Center
What position(s) reports to this position?
None
Minimum Education/Experience
Successful completion of the equivalent of Math 1483, Math 1513, Math 1533, Math 2013, or a subsequent course with a grade of B or better.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to interact with students on an individual or group basis.
Ability to explain information and mathematical concepts through oral and written communication and through the use of physical and technological demonstrations.
Must demonstrate effective communication and human relations skills while performing at work.
Firm grasp of the mathematical concepts that the tutor would be tutoring in the Math Resource Center.
A commitment to helping students learn.
Understand the value of a peer leadership role.
Recognize primary role to help students become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners.
Must be able to independently perform the essential responsibilities of the position.
Basic computer skills.
Must follow directions and guidelines.
Must be punctual and reliable.
Satisfactory completion of tutor training program.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
1. GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Medium work: This position requires the person to occasionally exert up to 50 pounds of force and frequently exert up to 20 pounds of force and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to grasp, lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
2. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to students, faculty, staff, and others to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.
This position requires the person to frequently move about the Math Lab to assist students and perform the essential functions of the position.
This position frequently requires the person to operate a computer and other office/lab equipment to perform the essential functions of the position.
This position requires the person to frequently operate equipment that involves repetitive motions of hands and wrists.
This position requires the person to frequently remain in a standing and stationary position.
This position requires the person to occasionally position self to access materials that may be above head or at ground level.
This position requires the person to frequently position self to work with lab equipment or assist students.
3. VISUAL ACUITY:
This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.
4. WORKING CONDITIONS
This position performs the essential functions in an indoor, office or lab setting.

Work Hours
Work schedule will range from 20 - 25 hours per week and may include evenings and Saturdays depending on Math Resource Center operational requirements. Schedules are set each semester.

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement)
Help students in the Math Resource Center with math assignments by asking questions, looking at student work, assessing the student's level of understanding, encouraging them to think through problems, use their resources, talk through problems, and work through problems.
Circulate through the center regularly to assist students at tables and computers.
Instruct and assist students in the use of mathematical related technology such as web based graphing calculators, mathematical software, and computerized tutorial programs through demonstration.
Provide services to students and faculty in the Math Resource Center:
- Help maintain system of filing of instructional software, textbooks, and solution manuals.
- Monitor central counter to keep assets and materials secure.
- Answer phone to provide information and mathematics tutoring.
- Administer the temporary loan of texts and calculators within the Math Lab.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
- Assist students with printing of assignments.
Assist with other functions of the Math Resource Center as needed.
Effectively interact and communicate with students, faculty, and staff while preforming duties.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date tutor logs.
Participate in training concerning mathematics courses and/or tutoring certifications by attending designated training sessions.
Assist with cleaning of the tables, monitors, keyboards, and whiteboards in the Math Resource Center and surrounding classrooms.
Help enforce Math Resource Center policies.
Participate in college initiatives and staff development programs and training.

Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.
Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.
Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC's established safety and health procedures and practices.
Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation, shelter in place drills, and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
