Job Description: Paraeducator - GEAR UP Tutor
Responsible to: Building Principal and Program Supervisor
Work Year: 180 Days - 6.5 hours
Location: LaVenture or Mount Baker Middle School (2 positions)
General: The GEAR UP Tutor's primary assignment is to work in a large group setting tutoring the Class of 2030 & 2031 students either individually or in groups. Will provide support to the classroom teachers by exploring classroom topics in depth with students. Topic areas may include Science, Math, English, and other subject areas. The GU Tutor will provide daily support to GU CCC Room, and monitor student progress. Tutor will track daily student services and enter into the RGI database. This position reports to the GEAR UP Program Supervisor. The position is valid for the 2025-26 school year only.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education and Experience: At a minimum, AA degree or higher or ability to meet State-determined performance standards in reading, math and writing (i.e., para-educator assessment)
  • Previous experience working with high school-aged students preferred
  • Demonstrated understanding of assigned topics, including Math and English
  • Bilingual preferred.
  • First aid/CPR may be required
  • Must have ability to guide and motivate students, and facilitate skills concepts
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; be able to interact successfully with parents and the school community
  • Ability to interact with people of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds in respectful and supportive ways
  • Excellent problem solving ability, including ability to explain concepts in multiple approaches
  • Organizational skills and flexibility to respond to changing student needs
  • Ability to handle student and family information in a confidential manner
  • Must be able to file and maintain records and perform routine clerical functions
  • Ability to function in a calm, efficient, courteous manner under stress and to exercise careful judgment, confidentiality and tact in the performance of duties
  • Must be able to work with staff and students; including the monitoring and disciplining of student activities
  • Must maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regularly work hours specified under contract
  • Must comply with all district policies and comply with the code of professional conduct
Position Responsibilities:
  • Daily Tutoring to assigned classrooms. Providing large group or individual tutoring.
  • Provide support to the classroom teachers by exploring classroom topics in depth with students.
  • Provide daily support to the GU CCC Office, including after school tutoring.
  • Daily Tracking of students receiving tutoring. Will need to turn in documentation for the GU Student database.
  • Enter tutoring services into the RGI database on a daily/weekly basis.
  • Monitor student progress and course completion
  • Chaperone field trips for assigned classes.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Work with individual and small groups of students. Assist classroom teachers by administering and scoring assessments, maintaining student progress/monitoring reports, organizing materials and providing support as requested.
  • Facilitate appropriate behavior, adaptation and implementation of lesson plans and classroom participation of students.
  • Assist with student discipline in small groups.
  • Plan and execute daily tutoring for Title I/LAP students. Keep daily logs for every student and monitor daily attendance of Title I/LAP students.
  • Maintain Time and Effort report documentation
  • Report student caseload related to LAP or other program reporting Perform such other duties as, from time to time, may be assigned.

Language Skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before staff. Bilingual skills are desirable.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Ability to operate a personal computer and related software. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certification. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
