The Lead Unix/Linux Systems Engineer will provide technical support and administration of Unix, Linux, and AIX servers across various New York City agencies, including but not limited to NYC.gov, 311, 311 Online, Analytics, Siebel, DSNY, DOF/NYC SERV, MOCS, NYCHA, HHS, Cares, DHS, and OTI Infrastructure Servers.
This position is part of a team responsible for managing and maintaining approximately 2,000+ servers located at both MetroTech and New Jersey data centers. The role involves performing day-to-day preventative and operational maintenance of City Agency and OTI servers, with a strong emphasis on system security, integrity, and sustainability through patching, upgrades, and other proactive measures.
Responsibilities will include:
- Administer, configure, engineer, and maintain Unix/Linux/AIX servers in large-scale environments.
- Ensure system reliability, performance, and security through regular monitoring, patching, and preventive maintenance.
- Manage Linux virtual instances and VMWare-based infrastructure.
- Perform system installations, configurations, upgrades, and tuning with minimal supervision.
- Support Red Hat Satellite Server, ServiceNow, Ansible Automation, and other enterprise management tools.
- Collaborate with other technical teams to ensure optimal system performance and availability.
- Participate in automation, infrastructure modernization, and cloud integration initiatives (AWS/Azure).
- Prepare and maintain detailed documentation of systems, configurations, and operational procedures.
- Adhere to organizational security and compliance policies.
- Handle special projects and initiatives as assigned.
HOURS/SHIFT
Day - Due to the necessary technical duties of this position in a 24/7 operation, candidate may be required to work various shifts such as weekends and/or nights/evenings.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS MANAGER (NO - 8298A

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 24 credits in the field of voice and/or data telecommunications or in a pertinent scientific, technical, electronic or related area, and four years of satisfactory fulltime experience in the performance of analytical, planning, operational, technical, or administrative duties in a voice and/or data telecommunications or closely related electronics planning, management, and/or service organization, one year of which must have been in a highly specialized capacity and 18 months must have been in an executive, managerial, or administrative capacity or in the supervision of staff performing work in the voice and/or data telecommunications field; or
2. An associate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 12 credits in the field of voice and/or data telecommunications or in a pertinent, scientific, technical, electronic or related area and five years of experience as described in "1" above; or
3. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above. However, all candidates must have at least a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and one year of the specialized experience as described in "1" above and must possess the 18 months of executive, managerial, administrative or supervisory experience as described in "1" above.
