Description

The Downtown Branch at The Slover invites applicants for a part-time Library Assistant II to join our team. Success in this position requires knowledge of library resources and procedures, the ability to deliver consistent, high-level customer care, and embrace innovative processes and technologies that enhance library operations.

The successful candidate will assist with the daily operations of the library and support patrons by providing information, promoting general usage of the facilities, and operating all library equipment.

This position reports to the Customer Service Team Lead.

The Slover is a beautiful venue and multi-use facility in downtown Norfolk with a mission to be a premier destination for residents and visitors to enjoy. The Slover will support a thriving downtown by encouraging tourism, providing resources for entrepreneurs, and housing the downtown branch library at The Slover.

Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $21.00–$24.15 hourly

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Performs circulation activities by checking materials in and out, reserving material requests, registering new patrons, coordinating interlibrary loans, and collecting fees.

  • Provides customer service by assisting patrons with technology, equipment, and access to e-resources, answering reference and directional questions, and recommending reading material

  • Performs administrative duties by preparing statistical reports, ordering supplies, opening mail, distributing library materials, replacing damaged materials, and preparing lost book forms.

  • Assists with events by setting up displays, creating promotional materials, and researching and preparing information about authors.

  • Receives incoming bins, checks materials for damage, processes new items, pulls and prepares hold requests, and removes expired holds.

  • Collects returned items from multiple drop points, discharges and/or marks items used in Workflows and routes to appropriate location.

  • Uses shelving best practices to ensure the aesthetics and maintenance of the collection.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

One year of experience in library or related customer service work.

Proficient with technology / comfortable assisting patrons with equipment, software, and basic troubleshooting.

Additional Information & Requirements

Work Hours: This position is 20 hours per week. Workdays and hours will vary depending on organizational needs. Staff typically work schedules anytime within the hours of 9:30 am - 6:00 pm on Monday, 8:30 am - 7:00 pm Tuesday – Thursday, and 8:30 am -5:00 pm on Friday and Saturday. This position will require flexibility to work some rotating weekends and a minimum of one evening per week.

  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

  • Retirement

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
