Job description

The New York Times Opinion desk is looking for a digital designer to join our award-winning design team. You will design and art direct compelling mobile-first visual storytelling products and experiences, prioritizing UX performance and applying experimentation with the newest technology. You will work collaboratively with other creative, technical and editorial teams, responsible for coordinating multiple assets and contributors and meeting deadlines that follow audience plans and deadlines.

You have a portfolio demonstrating talent in aesthetics, typography, layout, motion, storytelling techniques, and user-centered design principles. You have an affinity for institutional brand consistency and an eye for subtle detail. You quickly distill complex ideas into clean, organized, understandable and impactful digital experiences.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with editors, art directors, video, and photo to conceptualize and shape design ideas into immersive small, medium and large-scale digital storytelling experiences
  • Respond to projects with strategic and creative design solutions through interactive storytelling and wireframes
  • Iterate, synthesize and present multiple format options and explorations for stakeholder review
  • Develop template designs for recurring editorial features
  • Work with developers to ensure responsive and performant design quality across the full range of digital devices and browsers
  • Translate art and design into a versatile suite of assets for use across a range of promotion platforms, with an eye towards holistic cohesion
  • Incorporate feedback from multiple stakeholders through iterative processes, communicating ideas clearly and effectively
  • Develop, nurture and collaborate with a roster of artists (illustration, motion, and more) from sketch to final art phases
  • Contribute to the presentation of our journalism, and engage with others to foster an environment of learning and constructive dialogue about our work
  • Maintain high journalistic standards for multimedia journalism
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
  • You will report to Deputy Editor Design

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of digital design experience
  • Visual and interactive design skills - a clear grasp of typography, layout, color, motion, and behavior
  • Experience with iterative wireframing in Figma and implementing pixel-perfect digital design systems across multiple platforms

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong editorial judgment and experience proven ability to innovate and translate editorial priorities into multimedia storytelling
  • Experience with basic HTML/CSS and JavaScript.
  • Openness to developing technical fluency further to finesse design details with front-end developers
  • Experience working with video, audio, and data visualization
  • Experience working and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced news environment with a willingness to work a flexible, news-driven schedule that may occasionally include nights or weekends
