General Labourer
Full-Time Position
Cranbrook, BC

As a general labourer, you will work in various areas of the post, rail, and chipping operations for Kootenay Wood Preservers, a division of Doman Building Materials.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Strict adherence to all health and safety requirements including regular attendance at safety meetings
  • Perform housekeeping duties in work area to ensure a safe and clean work environment
  • Cutting, measuring, sorting and stacking wood products
  • Manually feed machines in the peeling and chipping process of wood products
  • Inspect and measure wood pieces to mark for cuts and to verify the accuracy of cuts
  • Set equipment controls to meet cutting specifications
  • Inspect wood products for imperfections and remove as required
  • Count, sort, and stack finished wood pieces
  • Guide wood pieces against saws and operate automatic feeding devices to guide cuts
  • Dispose of trash and waste materials as required

  • Able to accurately count and identify various lumber products
  • Good hand eye coordination and ability to maintain concentration and focus for long periods
  • Ability to work safely around moving machinery
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds or 23 kilograms
  • Bending, lifting, and reaching during course of shift
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write English
  • Must be able to wear hand, eye and ear protection as required
  • Because the work can be hazardous, teamwork and alertness by all workers will help to keep conditions safer for everyone
  • Experience working in wood processing or lumber yard is desirable
  • Must have own steel-toed boots

Working Conditions at the Job Site

  • Must be able to tolerate working in outdoor conditions year round
  • Work site will be hot in the summer and can be extremely cold during the winter
  • Workers will need strength and stamina to stand, bend and lift on a daily basis
  • Work site can often be noisy and dusty
  • May work around machinery with blades or other hazards
