Job description
The Upward Bound Program is an early intervention pre-college program that helps students prepare for higher education. Upward Bound brings high school students to college campuses after school, on the weekends, and during the summer to receive instruction in core subject areas. The Upward Bound program is seeking applicants for part-time instructor to facilitate a College and Career Readiness Lab for participants in the Federal TRIO Upward Bound Program.
Under the direction of the Upward Bound Director, the instructor will guide students through the development of a project based on an interest, talent, skill, problem, or area of curiosity. Students will research, plan, create, test, revise, and present a product, service, performance, portfolio, or demonstration. The instructor will provide coaching, structured feedback, career connections, and support for a culminating Upward Bound Student Showcase. The Upward Bound Instructor is responsible for preparing materials; developing instruction strategies; and evaluating student progress. They are role models, sharing expertise and experiences with participants and maintain required records. Instructors must be able to commit for 18 weeks and work well with staff at all levels within a collaborative environment.
Students enter the course with differing academic abilities, interests, skill levels, career goals, learning preferences, and prior project experience. The instructor will create an environment in which students can develop an existing talent or discover and develop a new skill. This position is governed by state and federal laws and institution policy.
Compensation: $25 per hour.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Instructors will report to the Upward Bound Director and manage needs in the classroom during Upward Bound sessions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Instruction and Project Facilitation
- Facilitate project-based learning sessions in accordance with the approved course design and Upward Bound schedule.
- Provide instruction in project planning, research, documentation, communication, presentation, reflection, and revision.
- Help students identify project goals, deliverables, success criteria, resources, and milestones.
- Provide individualized and small-group coaching appropriate to students' developmental and academic needs.
- Differentiate instruction and scaffolds while maintaining appropriate expectations for each student.
- Teach students to use feedback and revision as part of a continuous-improvement process.
- Use engaging instructional strategies that promote student choice, ownership, collaboration, and problem solving.
Project Development and Coaching
- Help students transform interests or broad ideas into feasible projects.
- Assist students in selecting an appropriate scope, timeline, product, and audience.
- Support research and the evaluation of reliable, relevant sources.
- Monitor student participation and milestone completion.
- Help students identify barriers, troubleshoot challenges, and revise project plans when appropriate.
- Provide timely, constructive, and specific feedback.
- Maintain project-related instructional records required by the program.
Career and Work-Based Learning
- Help students identify the relationship between their projects, transferable skills, occupations, academic programs, and postsecondary pathways.
- Teach professional communication, networking, interview preparation, workplace expectations, and appropriate follow-up practices.
- Coordinate with the Upward Bound Director to identify suitable community and employer participants.
- Facilitate career conversations and prepare students for professional interactions and discuss appropriate boundaries, safety, confidentiality, and conduct.
Student Showcase
- Help students identify what they will demonstrate and how they will communicate their learning.
- Guide students in preparing professional presentation materials, portfolios, displays, demonstrations, or supporting documentation.
- Teach organization, presentation, speaking, and audience-engagement skills.
- Conduct practice presentations and provide actionable feedback.
- Assist students in explaining what they created, what they learned, the skills they developed, the challenges they addressed, how they responded to feedback, and how the experience relates to a possible college or career pathway.
- Coordinate with Upward Bound staff regarding logistics, accessibility, safety, and approved participants.
- Participate in the culminating Upward Bound Student Showcase.
Student Support and Program Coordination
- Establish rapport with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
- Encourage participation, persistence, self-advocacy, and a growth mindset.
- Communicate concerns about attendance, engagement, academic progress, safety, or student welfare to the appropriate Upward Bound staff.
- Maintain student confidentiality and share information only with authorized personnel who have a legitimate educational or program-related need.
- Refer students to the appropriate staff member for eligibility, financial aid, counseling, disability accommodations, or other specialized services.
- Attend required meetings, training, orientations, and program activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Documentation, Assessment, and Evaluation
- Maintain accurate instructional, attendance, participation, project, and assessment records.
- Document student progress and significant instructional or participation concerns.
- Complete reports, surveys, assessments, rubrics, and grant-related documentation assigned by the Upward Bound Director.
- Participate in program evaluation and continuous-improvement activities.
- Protect records in accordance with FERPA, SouthArk requirements, and applicable grant requirements
Skills and Abilities:
- Facilitate student choice without allowing projects to become undefined or unmanageable.
- Coach students through research, planning, production, revision, reflection, and presentation.
- Balance individual choice with safety, time, resources, accessibility, and program constraints.
- Adapt instruction for different readiness levels and learning preferences.

- Build trusting but appropriately bounded youth relationships.

Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- Experience providing instruction, facilitation, coaching, mentoring, training, or structured support.
- Experience developing or implementing learning activities, projects, presentations, demonstrations, or other student-centered work.
- Ability to work effectively with secondary-age students similar to UB participants.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, establish professional relationships, organize activities, and manage multiple student projects.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Experience with project-based, experiential, inquiry-based, or student-led learning.
- Experience working with high school students.
- Experience with career exploration, workforce development, entrepreneurship, or industry-connected instruction.
- Experience in arts, STEM, technology, career and technical education, business, or another practical project-development area.
- Experience guiding portfolios, exhibitions, demonstrations, or student showcases. Industry, teaching, training, or facilitation experience.
Physical Requirements:
The position involves prolonged periods of standing, walking, speaking, listening, operating standard office and instructional equipment, moving/ lifting up to 20 pounds, and traveling between approved instructional or community locations.
