What is a weekend kennel attendant?

Weekend kennel attendants are individuals who care for animals, primarily dogs and cats, in boarding facilities or animal shelters during weekends. Their duties typically include feeding, cleaning kennels, exercising animals, monitoring their health and behavior, administering medications if needed, and providing companionship. Weekend kennel attendants play a crucial role in ensuring animals are safe, comfortable, and well-cared for when regular staff may be off-duty. This job often requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and a love for animals. Prior experience with pets or animal care is helpful, but many facilities offer on-the-job training.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend kennel attendant?

To thrive as a Weekend Kennel Attendant, you need basic animal care knowledge, attention to detail, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with cleaning and sanitation tools, as well as animal management software, is commonly required. Strong communication, reliability, and compassion are essential soft skills for interacting with both animals and pet owners. These skills ensure the well-being of animals, maintain kennel cleanliness, and foster trust with clients and team members.

What are some common challenges faced by weekend kennel staff, and how can they be addressed?

Weekend kennel staff often manage a higher volume of pets due to increased boarding over weekends and holidays, which can lead to a fast-paced environment. Common challenges include maintaining cleanliness, ensuring timely feeding and medication, and monitoring animal behavior for signs of stress or illness. Effective communication with team members and attention to detail are essential for addressing these challenges. Proactively organizing tasks and being adaptable can help ensure the well-being of all animals in your care while also supporting a smooth workflow.

Join a team that treats dogs like family and believes safety, fun, and excellent care go paw‑in‑paw. If you love dogs and love working hard to keep them safe, healthy, and happy… we’d love to meet you.

What’s a Star Buddy?

Star Buddies are the heart of Dog Star Ranch. You’re the primary handler and caregiver for the dogs in our daycare and boarding programs.

Current shift available 11:30am - 7:30pm

You’ll thrive in this role if you…

  • Love dogs and want to learn how to lead groups safely
  • Enjoy staying active and being hands‑on
  • Communicate clearly with teammates and dog parents
  • Notice details quickly — changes in behavior, health, or routines
  • Work well in a fast‑paced, team‑focused environment

What You’ll Do:

  • Monitor and manage groups of daycare and boarding dogs
  • Ensure every dog is safe, healthy, and well cared for
  • Feed dogs and manage individual diets
  • Oversee runs and boarding areas
  • Maintain a clean, sanitized environment throughout your shift
  • Notice and report changes in behavior or health
  • Learn and remember every dog in our care
  • Assist with customer questions in a friendly, knowledgeable way
  • Help with arrivals and departures
  • Double‑check dog inventory at check‑in and checkout
  • Bathe or blow out dogs who need cleanup before heading home

What We’re Looking For:

  • Reliable, positive team members
  • Comfort working around all breeds and sizes
  • Ability to lift, bend, clean, and stay on your feet
  • Love of dogs — and willingness to learn the right way to handle them
  • Weekend and holiday availability (we care for dogs 365 days a year)

Why You’ll Love Working Here:

  • A fun, supportive team
  • Tons of hands-on experience with dogs
  • Consistent training so you always feel confident and prepared
  • Amazing dog clients and a culture focused on safety and positive handling
