What is a weekend janitor?

A Weekend Janitor is responsible for cleaning and maintaining a facility during the weekends. Duties typically include sweeping, mopping, trash removal, restroom sanitation, and restocking supplies. This role ensures that the premises remain clean and presentable for employees or customers. Weekend Janitors may work in offices, schools, retail stores, or other commercial buildings. Attention to detail and the ability to work independently are important for success in this position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the weekend janitor position?

To thrive as a Weekend Janitor, you need reliable cleaning skills, attention to detail, and the physical stamina required for custodial work; a high school diploma or equivalent is often preferred but not always required. Familiarity with cleaning chemicals, tools such as floor buffers or vacuums, and workplace safety protocols like OSHA guidelines is beneficial. Being punctual, self-motivated, and possessing good communication skills can greatly enhance performance in this role. These skills are important to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for all facility users, even during off-peak hours.

What are the typical working hours and expectations for a weekend janitor?

You may be responsible for a set area or multiple zones, and tasks can include sweeping, mopping, trash removal, restroom sanitization, and restocking supplies. Flexibility and reliability are highly valued, as weekend periods often require independent work with minimal direct supervision. Many employers provide an orientation or training on specific cleaning procedures and equipment. This role can be a great way to gain experience in facilities maintenance and may offer opportunities for additional weekday shifts or advancement over time.

Do weekend janitors work overnight?

Weekend janitors often work overnight shifts, especially if cleaning is scheduled after business hours or during the night to avoid disrupting daily operations. The specific hours can vary depending on the employer and the facility's needs, but overnight work is common for weekend janitors. Skills in time management and safety procedures are important for these shifts.

Job description

Janitorial Coordinator
About Mobile Loaves & Fishes
Mobile Loaves & Fishes (MLF) is a social outreach ministry that has been empowering communities into a lifestyle of service with the homeless since 1998. Founded in Austin, Texas, the organization serves its homeless neighbors through three core programs: Truck Ministry, Community First! Village, and Community Works. Often referred to as the most talked about neighborhood in Austin, Community First! Village is a 51-acre master planned development that provides affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community for men and women coming out of chronic homelessness. We are now embarking on a new phase of community expansion, adding more than 1400 new neighbors over the next 5-10 years.
About the Role
The Janitorial Coordinator plays an integral role within the Site Operations Department, coordinating the day-to-day janitorial operations throughout Community First! Village (CFV). This position provides guidance, support, and oversight to a janitorial crew made up of CFV neighbors participating in MLF's Dignified Income (DI) program and helps ensure that facilities throughout the community are maintained to a consistent standard of cleanliness and care. As CFV continues to grow, the Janitorial Coordinator will help support consistent, effective janitorial operations while creating opportunities for neighbors to engage in purposeful work through the DI program.
This is a full-time, non-exempt position reporting to the Janitorial Manager. Due to the nature and requirements of the position, hours are flexible to fit need but typically include 7am-4pm Monday-Friday. Some nights and weekends may be required. The Janitorial Coordinator will office at Community First! Village located at 9116 Hog Eye Road, Austin, Tx 78724
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Coordinate, train, and provide ongoing guidance and support to the janitorial crew of CFV neighbors participating in the Dignified Income (DI) program.
  • Provide day-to-day oversight of janitorial work, addressing performance concerns, contractor no-shows, and other issues that may affect the quality or cleanliness of CFV facilities.
  • Coordinate weekly contract signing and maintain accurate, complete, and organized contractor documentation, agreements, and related records.
  • Manage the CFV janitorial supply inventory and storeroom, including ordering, organizing, maintaining, and distributing supplies to the janitorial crew.
  • Receive and enter maintenance and repair requests in CFV's AppFolio system and communicate requests and updates to the appropriate team members.
  • Conduct daily quality control checks of facility cleanliness and promptly communicate recurring issues, unforeseen conditions, or other concerns to the Janitorial Manager.
  • Coordinate with MLF staff and the janitorial crew regarding additional, special, and ongoing janitorial needs, ensuring schedules, assignments, expectations, and changes are clearly communicated and followed through.
  • Maintain knowledge and proficiency in the proper use, care, and maintenance of janitorial equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • Monitor janitorial equipment and supplies for safety concerns and promptly report unsafe conditions to the Janitorial Manager.

  • Ability to train, coordinate, and provide guidance to a diverse group of contract workers with varying skill levels.
  • Ability to build positive relationships while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and expectations.
  • Comfortable providing feedback, addressing performance concerns, and holding others accountable with patience, compassion, and professionalism.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate clearly with both MLF staff and members of the janitorial crew.

MLF VISION
We empower communities into a lifestyle of service with the homeless.
MLF MISSION
We provide food and clothing, cultivate community, and promote dignity to our homeless brothers and sisters in need.
GOALS
  • Transform the way people view the stereotype of those who find themselves homeless
  • Reconnect the homeless to self, family and community
  • Help the chronically homeless rediscover and utilize their God-given talents to do purposeful work
  • Connect human to human, heart to heart through the fellowship of food and hospitality
  • Inspire people into a lifestyle of abundance by giving their best first

BELIEF STATEMENTS
The vision is supported by belief statements centered on our belief that homelessness is the result of a profound, catastrophic loss of family:
  • God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life
  • By virtue of being created by God in His image, we are all called to live in community and relationship with Him through each other
  • The family is the original cell of social life
  • You shall love your neighbor as yourself
  • All members of the human family are equal in dignity
  • The Lord God took the man and settled him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and care for it. Gen 2:15

CORE VALUES
MLF is committed to fostering a culture that prioritizes relational connection. We believe there is opportunity in every aspect of our work to be relational in a highly transactional world. In this culture, transactions are means to relational ends, not the other way around.
This begins with the countercultural love poured out by Jesus Christ and grows as imperfect individuals strive to show this love to each other human-to-human, heart-to-heart.
Each individual's openness to the journey of their own personal growth is essential in building our relational culture, and we believe this culture flourishes as we each continuously strive to more fully embody these four core values:
  • Faith: We define Faith as the foundational belief that our world and all our work belong to God. This allows us to engage our work with joy and lightheartedness, knowing that we are not ultimately in control.
  • Humility: We define Humility as rightly viewing oneself as a single piece of a grander story. This humility leads to a view of oneself that is neither too high nor too low.
  • Generous Spirit: We define a Generous Spirit as a readiness to give more grace, mercy, and hospitality than is necessary or expected. This posture allows us to see others for who they are, not what they do.
  • Integrity: We define Integrity as a wholehearted commitment to doing right by God, ourselves, and others. This wholeheartedness shows itself in consistently choosing honesty, responsibility and ownership in all actions and decisions.

This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee. Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change, or new ones may be assigned at any time with or without notice.
MLF is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. Personnel are chosen based on ability without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, genetics, disability, marital status, or sexual orientation in accordance with federal and state law.
