Job description

Shape reliable operations at Ionbond in Madison Heights, MI

Picture your morning at our Madison Heights coating center: you review overnight equipment logs, prioritize a preventive task on a high‑vacuum chamber, and then partner with a process engineer to chase down an intermittent fault on a PLC-controlled subsystem. By afternoon, you’ve updated schematics, replaced a high‑voltage component, and coached a teammate at another Ionbond site via video on a similar repair. That’s a typical day when you’re the go-to expert keeping our advanced coating assets online.

About Ionbond — The Surface Engineers™

Ionbond delivers high‑performance surface coatings for aerospace, medical, food contact, automotive, decorative, tooling, and fuel cell applications. Our portfolio spans PVD, PACVD, and CVD technologies. With 34 coating centers across 15 countries in Europe, North America, and Asia, we operate one of the largest networks in the world. Ionbond is part of the IHI Group, a renowned Japanese industrial consortium.

How you’ll make an impact
  • Own both planned and corrective maintenance across production equipment, clean line, and plant utilities to keep uptime high.
  • Create and maintain clear records: work notifications, service histories, and updated technical drawings (schematics/blueprints).
  • Diagnose and repair vacuum systems confidently, including work around high‑voltage components and interlocks.
  • Assess, prioritize, and execute repairs that minimize downtime and safeguard process capability.
  • Monitor equipment performance and implement reliability improvements that cut repeat failures.
  • Collaborate closely with managers and process engineers to resolve process interruptions and inconsistent results.
  • Champion 5S—maintain a tidy, organized, and safe workspace.
  • Pitch in on additional duties as operations require.
What you’ll bring
  • 3+ years of maintenance experience in an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Education: Technical/trade or engineering certificate/degree preferred; high school diploma/GED required.
  • Vacuum technology experience; training available to deepen expertise if needed.
  • Strong troubleshooting mindset—identify failure mechanisms, isolate root cause, and implement durable fixes.
  • Solid electrical skill set; comfortable with control systems and PLCs.
  • Self‑starter who works independently, manages priorities, and meets deadlines.
  • Clear communicator—verbal and in email—with peers, leadership, and suppliers.
  • Willing to work overtime and weekends when required.
  • Occasional travel to other U.S. centers and internationally.
Hands‑on strengths we value
  • Mechanical troubleshooting
  • 120/208/240/480 V systems
  • Commercial/industrial electrical installation, repair, and diagnostics
  • Pneumatics troubleshooting
  • Powerhouse operations
  • Heavy equipment electrical systems and diagnostics
  • Equipment installation, wiring, and commissioning
  • Mechanical systems and component repair
  • Machine safety inspections
  • Equipment diagnostics, repair, and preventive maintenance
  • Reading and interpreting electrical schematics
Automation platforms you’ll encounter

Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems: Fanuc, Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi, Omron, Siemens, Panasonic, Schneider Electric, Beckoff, Modicon, B&R Industrial Automation, Sigmatek.
