JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

This is a full time position scheduled five days per week including weekends from eight to ten hours per day. The primary mission is to maintain, protect, and preserve the natural and cultural resources of the canyons and other Tribal properties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties may be assigned)

  • Maintain Indian and Tahquitz Canyons, the Trial Building, Tribal Cemetery, and other Tribal properties as may be required.
  • Ensure the safety of other workers, hikers, and guests in the canyons.
  • Abide and enforce regulations/ordinances in the Canyons as set forth by the Tribal Council.
  • Assist in search & rescue operations as may be necessary.
  • Assist local police, fire department, search and rescue units, and emergency medical agencies as directed and Tribal organizations as may be required to maintain Tribal land.
  • Maintain trails, signage, picnic areas, parking areas, roads, in the canyons.
  • Maintain Canyon uniforms, vehicles, and equipment in serviceable condition.
  • Perform other tasks as may be directed.
  • Abide by the general policies and procedures in force for all Tribal employees.
  • Assist in daily clean-up of the canyon and other Tribal properties.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of High School Diploma.
  • Experience in working with small motors, hand tools, chain saws and other maintenance equipment
  • Must have people skills.
  • Able to read topographic maps, aerial photos.
  • Able to use GPS.
  • Certified in CPR and Basic First Aid.
  • Must be physically fit and pass a physical examination within 30 days of employment.
  • Must be able to hike three miles with a 25 pound pack in a time limit of 45 minutes.
  • Must maintain class B license.
  • Must be a skilled hiker in desert and mountainous terrain.
  • Must be skilled in land navigation using map and compass.
  • Must be knowledgeable in search and rescue operations.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to hike all of the trails in Tahquitz and Indian Canyons in all weather conditions carrying a backpack with needed supplies. Must be able to perform maintenance tasks during the off season (summer months). Task may include, but not limited to fuels suppression, trail maintenance work, trash clean-up, etc.

Must be able to lift at least 50 lb. to waist level and be able to walk carrying the weight. Will need to move such items such as rocks, hay, trees, and equipment.

Must be able to work outdoors exposed to weather conditions on a daily basis which can range from 32 degrees F. to 125 degrees F. No matter the conditions, the individual must be able to work for extended periods of time outdoors.
