Job description

SFI is looking for Grinders with 3 years or more experience in tank building.


General Summary:

  • Grinds and smoothes surfaces of steel parts or tanks up to 180 grit prior to finishing operations, with assistance from Bay Supervisor or Master Craftsman. This position is classified as a safety sensitive position, see Limitations and Disclaimer for additional information.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Buffs welds and polishes ground areas to produce smooth, unmarred surface.
  • Selects correct grade of belt, and replaces worn belts.
  • Examines all workpieces for defects after completion.
  • Learns all grinding tools and types of abrasives to be used.
  • Completes manufacturing documentation in a timely manner.
  • Follows all safety guidelines as noted in Safety Manual.
  • Assists all supervisors and performs other duties as needed and directed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of all abrasives used in grinding.
  • Knowledge of grinding abrasives used to achieve up to 320 grit.
  • Knowledge of operation of all grinding tools.
  • Knowledge to grind any part or tank weld that is assigned.
  • Ability to read cut sheets, blueprints, and tape measures
  • Ability to keep hand and arm steady when moving or holding arm and hand in one position.
  • Ability to meet budgeted hours.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or 1+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Working Conditions:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Day Shift - Monday -Thursday 7am-5:30pm
Night Shift - Monday - Thursday 6pm-4:30am
Weekends - Friday/Saturday/Sunday 6am-6:30pm
$25-$30 per hour based on skills
