Weekend Golang Software Engineer information

What does a Weekend Golang Software Engineer do?

A Weekend Golang Software Engineer is a software developer who specializes in the Go programming language (commonly known as Golang) and works specifically on weekends. Their responsibilities typically include writing, testing, and maintaining code for backend systems, APIs, or cloud services using Go. They may work on project-based tasks, bug fixes, or ongoing development needs that require attention outside of regular weekday hours. This role is ideal for companies that need continued development support through the weekend or have teams distributed across different time zones.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Golang Software Engineer?

To thrive as a Weekend Golang Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of Go programming, data structures, algorithms, and experience with backend development, typically supported by a degree in computer science or relevant work experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS or GCP), and containerization tools such as Docker are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective time management, and clear communication skills help engineers excel in weekend or part-time roles. These competencies ensure high-quality, maintainable code and efficient collaboration, even in limited working hours.

What is the difference between Weekend Golang Software Engineer vs Part-Time Backend Developer?

AspectWeekend Golang Software EngineerPart-Time Backend Developer
Required SkillsProficiency in Golang, REST APIs, concurrency, and backend developmentExperience with backend languages (e.g., Python, Java), API development, database management
Work EnvironmentProject-based, flexible hours, remote or on-siteFlexible schedule, freelance or contract basis, remote or on-site
Industry UsageTech startups, software firms, open-source projectsVarious industries including tech, e-commerce, finance, often freelance

The Weekend Golang Software Engineer typically focuses on Golang-specific backend tasks during weekends, often in tech-focused environments. In contrast, a Part-Time Backend Developer may work with various languages and industries, offering more flexibility but less specialization in Golang. Both roles suit those seeking flexible schedules but differ in technical focus and industry application.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Software Engineer - Python/Golang - Kubernetes based in Netherlands.

As a Software Engineer on a Kubernetes-focused product team, you will build and enhance open-source solutions that make Kubernetes easier to operate and integrate into production environments. You will develop operators that provide lifecycle management for mission-critical components and addons that deliver streamlined, low-operations experiences for Kubernetes users. Working primarily with Python and/or Golang, you will contribute to high-quality software used by a global technical community. You will stay close to the latest Kubernetes capabilities and open-source innovations, identifying opportunities to bring valuable functionality to end users. The role involves close collaboration with talented engineers, industry peers, and technology partners in a highly distributed environment. It is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who is passionate about Linux, Kubernetes, cloud-native technologies, and open-source software.

Accountabilities
  • Design and develop high-quality software features for Kubernetes-focused products and open-source solutions.
  • Build and maintain Kubernetes operators that provide complete lifecycle management for mission-critical components.
  • Develop and improve Kubernetes addons that enable seamless integration of projects and services with minimal operational overhead.
  • Write clean, maintainable, reliable, and well-tested code using Python and/or Golang.
  • Investigate, debug, and resolve technical issues while engaging constructively with the wider open-source community.
  • Stay current with new Kubernetes features, ecosystem developments, and relevant open-source projects, incorporating valuable capabilities into product solutions.
  • Collaborate proactively with engineers across a globally distributed team and contribute to technical discussions and design decisions.
  • Work with industry peers, technology partners, and external contributors to identify and implement effective solutions for users.
  • Contribute to engineering best practices, code quality, documentation, and continuous improvement.
  • Participate in global team collaboration and travel internationally for internal and external events, typically for 2-4 weeks per year.
Requirements:
  • Professional software development experience with Golang or Python; experience with both is highly desirable.
  • Practical experience with Kubernetes is preferred, although it is not strictly required.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering principles, with an emphasis on writing high-quality and maintainable code.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in Computer Science, STEM, or a related technical discipline.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across a distributed international team.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for technology, open-source software, Linux, cloud-native platforms, and solving complex engineering problems.
  • Ability to work independently while proactively collaborating with colleagues and contributing to a globally distributed engineering environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills, with a willingness to investigate issues and learn continuously.
  • Results-oriented mindset and commitment to delivering reliable, high-quality solutions.
  • Curiosity and adaptability when working with new technologies, tools, and open-source projects.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally for company and external events, approximately 2-4 weeks per year.
Benefits:
  • Fully distributed, remote working environment.
  • Opportunity to work on Kubernetes, Linux, Python, Golang, and open-source technologies.
  • Collaboration with experienced engineers and experts across a wide range of technical fields.
  • USD 2,000 annual personal learning and development budget.
  • Performance-driven annual bonus in addition to base compensation.
  • Annual compensation review based on location, experience, and performance.
  • Recognition and performance rewards.
  • Annual holiday leave.
  • Maternity and paternity leave.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Twice-yearly opportunities to meet colleagues in person through team sprints and company events.
  • Opportunities to travel internationally and work with colleagues from around the world.
  • Priority Pass and travel upgrades for eligible long-haul company events.
  • Opportunity to contribute to widely used open-source technologies and collaborate with the broader technical community.
