Job description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Locate and mark underground utilities (fiber optic, gas, electric, water, sewer, etc.) using specialized equipment.
  • Interpret utility maps, blueprints, and GIS data to ensure accurate locating.
  • Utilize electromagnetic locating devices and ground-penetrating radar as needed.
  • Clearly mark utility locations using paint, flags, and other approved methods in accordance with industry standards.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, crews, and project managers regarding utility locations and potential conflicts.
  • Document all locates, including photos, sketches, and reports, using company systems and applications.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, company policies, and local/state guidelines (e.g., 811 requirements).
  • Respond to emergency locate requests as needed.
  • Maintain and care for company-provided equipment and vehicles.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience in utility locating, construction, or telecommunications preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, prints, and technical documents.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain.
  • Comfortable using technology (tablets, GPS systems, locating equipment).
  • Strong communication and time management skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to walk long distances and work on uneven terrain.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, and stand for extended periods.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily field-based work in outdoor environments.
  • May require early mornings, evenings, weekends, or on-call availability.

Preferred Certifications (Not Required):

  • Utility locating certification
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
  • Valid DOT medical card
