Job description

Job Summary This is entry-level work in operating and maintaining a municipal potable water treatment plant. Work involves performing routine and semi-skilled assignments in accordance with established procedures and assisting in a variety of duties to develop skill and competency in water plant operations. This position requires shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as the treatment processes are operated continuously.

All work is performed under immediate supervision and evaluated through observation and results obtained. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Entry-level skilled work in operating Wastewater/Water Treatment Plant equipment and processes Responsibility for learning and participating in the care and efficient operation of the Wastewater/Water Treatment Plant during an assigned shift Prepares log sheets; changes charts and recording sheets for flow recorders Inspects motors, bearings, and gearboxes for overheating and proper lubrication Maintains equipment, process tanks, buildings, and grounds clean and orderly Monitors and/or inspects numerous process control parameters for proper operation Monitors and/or inspects numerous process control parameters for proper operation Assists certified operator in charge of assigned shift as required Assists in maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment Collects water samples at various sampling points, performs lab tests, and records collected data. Performs mathematical calculations on collected data and process control equipment.

May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department. Supervisory Responsibilities: None Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in a water plant. Ability to learn the normal operating principles and practices of water treatment processes. Ability to learn to troubleshoot problems of water treatment processes and equipment.

Ability to learn safety regulations, occupational hazards, precautions, and job requirements. Ability to learn basic computer skills necessary to operate various computer-controlled systems. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working, harmonious relationships with co-workers, other city employees, and the public. May assist in making minor repairs to equipment. Education and Experience: High school diploma from an accredited school or GED; An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provide the knowledge, skills and abilities and other competencies necessary for success in the target position may be considered.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements: Valid Florida Driver's License required Must obtain State of Florida Class "C" Water Plant Operator certification within two (2) years. Essential Physical Skills: Requires work that involves walking or standing some of the time, exerting up to 60 pounds of force on a recurring basis. The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of taste, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception. Mental Demands: Required to use written and oral communication skills Read and interpret data, information, and documents Supplemental Information Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
