Weekend Financial Planner information

What is a Weekend Financial Planner?

A Weekend Financial Planner is a financial advisor who offers their services primarily during weekends to accommodate clients who are unavailable during regular business hours. They help individuals and families create budgets, plan for retirement, manage investments, and achieve their financial goals. These professionals may work independently, for financial firms, or as part of a team, providing personalized advice and planning sessions outside of typical weekday schedules.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Financial Planner?

To thrive as a Weekend Financial Planner, you need a strong grasp of financial planning principles, investment strategies, and regulatory compliance, usually supported by a relevant degree and certifications such as CFP or Series 65. Familiarity with financial planning software, portfolio management systems, and spreadsheet tools is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, trustworthiness, and effective communication are essential for building client relationships and clearly explaining complex financial concepts. These skills and qualities are critical for delivering sound financial advice and maintaining client trust during flexible weekend hours.

What unique challenges and opportunities come with working as a Weekend Financial Planner?

As a Weekend Financial Planner, you may encounter the challenge of balancing client availability with your own schedule, since many clients seek advice outside traditional business hours. This role often involves a high degree of flexibility and self-motivation, as you may work independently or as part of a smaller weekend team. On the positive side, working weekends allows you to serve clients who are unable to meet during the week, potentially expanding your client base. Additionally, this schedule can provide more control over your work-life balance and may offer unique advancement opportunities within firms that value off-hours client service.

Are there part-time weekend financial planner jobs?

Part-time weekend financial planner jobs are available in the industry, often requiring certifications such as CFP and flexible scheduling to accommodate clients' needs. These roles typically involve advising clients on investments, retirement planning, and budgeting during weekends or after standard business hours.

Do weekend financial planners work weekends?

Weekend financial planners often work on weekends to accommodate clients' schedules, especially during busy periods like tax season or financial year-end. Their work hours can vary based on client needs and firm policies, but flexibility is common in this role.

Job description

Financial Planner

Melville, NY | Full-Time | 100% In-Office | $75,000–$125,000+

No Cold Calling. No Client Book Required. Long-Term Career Opportunity.

An established independent wealth management practice in Melville, NY is seeking a Financial Planner to join our team.

This is a unique opportunity for an ambitious financial professional who wants to build a long-term career in wealth management without the pressure of cold calling, prospecting, or bringing an existing client book.

Our practice has been serving clients for more than 35 years and currently manages $500+ million in assets across more than 500 client households. We specialize in comprehensive retirement planning, investment management, and multigenerational wealth planning for high-net-worth families.

The Financial Planner will initially work closely with our partner advisors, supporting existing client relationships, financial planning, investment management, and trading. As the successful candidate develops their technical expertise and familiarity with our clients, the role will become progressively more client-facing.

Over approximately the first 1–2 years, we expect the Financial Planner to transition from primarily planning and advisor support into participating in client meetings, running meetings independently, and ultimately becoming a primary advisor for a meaningful portion of the firm's existing client base.

No existing client book is required.

There is no cold-calling requirement and no expectation that the Financial Planner build a book from scratch.

Our primary focus is providing excellent advice and service to our existing clients and retaining those relationships across generations.

For the right individual, responsibilities and compensation can grow significantly, with the potential for future participation in a Profit Partner track.

Responsibilities

The Financial Planner will work directly with our partner advisors and support team to deliver comprehensive financial planning and investment-management services.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing and updating comprehensive financial plans
  • Developing retirement-income and cash-flow projections
  • Performing RMD analysis and making distribution recommendations
  • Coordinating tax-planning strategies with clients' CPAs and tax professionals
  • Coordinating estate-planning strategies with clients' attorneys
  • Performing insurance analysis and making appropriate recommendations
  • Reviewing asset allocations and assisting with portfolio-management recommendations
  • Executing trades under the direction of partner advisors
  • Preparing for client review and financial-planning meetings
  • Participating in client meetings alongside partner advisors
  • Gradually assuming responsibility for running client meetings independently
  • Developing a detailed understanding of clients' financial goals, family dynamics, estate plans, and long-term needs
  • Maintaining relationships with high-net-worth individuals and families
  • Working closely with executive assistants and support staff to deliver a high level of client service

Strong performers may progress into greater client-facing responsibility faster than the typical 1–2 year timeline.

What Makes This Opportunity Different

Many traditional financial-advisor roles require professionals to spend a significant portion of their careers cold calling, prospecting, networking, and gathering assets before they can focus on actually advising clients.

This position is different.

Our practice already serves more than 500 client households and manages more than $500 million in assets.

We are hiring someone to help advise, service, and retain those existing relationships for decades to come.

The Financial Planner will be able to focus on developing as an advisor, learning our clients' needs, solving complex financial-planning problems, managing investments, and ultimately becoming a trusted primary advisor to established high-net-worth families.

Our practice continues to grow primarily through referrals from existing clients and longstanding relationships with CPAs and estate-planning attorneys.

Business-development opportunities will be available for an advisor who wants to pursue them, including opportunities for additional compensation, but bringing in new clients or assets is not the primary responsibility of this position.

Client service, financial planning, relationship management, and retention are the primary focus.

Career Progression

We are looking for someone who views this opportunity as a long-term career home, not simply their next job.

A typical progression may include:

Financial Planner / Advisor Support

Learn the client base, financial-planning process, investment philosophy, technology, and internal procedures while supporting the partner advisors.

Client-Facing Financial Planner

Take an increasingly active role in client meetings, financial-planning recommendations, investment management, and relationship management.

Primary Client Advisor

Independently manage and retain a meaningful group of established client relationships while continuing to work alongside the firm's partners and support team.

Potential Profit Partner

Exceptional long-term performers may have the opportunity to participate in a future Profit Partner track based on performance, client retention, professional development, and the future needs of the organization.

Responsibilities and compensation can grow quickly for a strong performer.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills
  • Professional and polished client-facing demeanor
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to build trusted relationships with older and high-net-worth clients
  • Genuine interest in comprehensive financial planning and investment management
  • Desire to build a long-term career in wealth management
  • CFP® certification or willingness to obtain the CFP® certification within approximately 1–2 years of joining the firm
  • Ability and willingness to work five days per week in our Melville, NY office

Securities Licensing

Existing securities licenses are preferred but are not required at the time of hire.

Preferred licensing includes:

  • Series 7 + Series 66, or
  • Series 7 + Series 65 + Series 63

For a strong candidate who does not yet hold the necessary securities licenses, the firm is willing to sponsor the required licensing and examinations.

A New York State Life, Accident & Health Insurance license is also preferred but is not required at the time of hire.

Preferred Background

We welcome candidates from a range of financial and professional backgrounds.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • CFP® certification
  • Previous experience with an RIA, independent broker-dealer, wealth-management firm, bank, or financial-planning practice
  • CPA designation
  • Law degree
  • Estate-planning experience
  • Tax-planning or accounting experience
  • Retirement-planning experience
  • Investment-management experience

CPA credentials or a law degree are considered a plus, but they are not required.

We are particularly interested in speaking with CFP® professionals, CPAs, tax professionals, and attorneys with estate-planning experience who are interested in transitioning into or advancing a long-term career in wealth management.

Compensation

Base salary: $75,000–$125,000+, depending on experience, licenses, credentials, professional background, and ability to assume client-facing responsibilities.

Compensation includes:

  • Competitive base salary
  • Annual salary reviews and raises
  • Annual performance-based bonus, typically approximately equivalent to an additional paycheck
  • Additional compensation opportunities for successful business development
  • Potential long-term participation in a Profit Partner track

The broad salary range is designed to accommodate candidates at different stages of their careers, from talented professionals transitioning into financial planning to experienced CFP® professionals who may be able to assume greater responsibility more quickly.

The structure of the position is intended to provide a reliable and competitive income without requiring the advisor to build a client book or depend on commissions to support themselves.

Benefits

  • 401(k) with 4% employer match, subject to the plan's vesting schedule
  • Additional employer profit-sharing contribution calculated annually
  • Employer-paid disability insurance
  • Employer-paid Errors & Omissions insurance
  • Employer reimbursed CFP® exam expense upon passing
  • Employer-sponsored securities licensing for qualified candidates who need to obtain required licenses
  • 10 days of paid vacation, Paid time off when U.S. financial markets are closed and Sick time
  • Free and convenient on-site parking
  • Potential future Profit Partner opportunities

Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance premiums are not currently employer-paid.

Technology & Support

The Financial Planner will have access to an established technology and administrative infrastructure, including:

  • LPL ClientWorks
  • Redtail CRM
  • Morningstar Workstation
  • Microsoft Office suite
  • Zoom
  • Dedicated executive-assistant and administrative support

Our support structure is designed to allow advisors to spend more of their time on financial planning, investment management, and client relationships rather than routine administrative work.

About the Practice

We are an established independent wealth management practice that has served clients for more than 35 years.

Our team currently manages:

  • $500+ million in assets
  • 500+ client households
  • A predominantly high-net-worth client base
  • Typical client net worth exceeding $1 million
  • Many client relationships spanning multiple generations

The average age of our existing client base is approximately 70, making relationship continuity, retirement planning, estate coordination, tax planning, and multigenerational wealth management particularly important to the future of our practice.

Our current team consists of two partner advisors and three dedicated support professionals.

We are hiring another financial professional who wants to become an integral part of the long-term future of the practice.

Location & Schedule

Melville, New York

Monday–Friday | 9:00 AM–5:00 PM

Who Will Thrive Here

The ideal candidate is ambitious, relationship-oriented, intellectually curious, and genuinely interested in helping clients make important financial decisions.

You should be comfortable communicating with older and high-net-worth clients and capable of explaining complex financial concepts clearly and professionally.

We value technical ability, but we place equal importance on communication skills, judgment, professionalism, reliability, and the ability to build long-term client relationships.

Most importantly, we are looking for someone who wants to build a long-term career with an established wealth-management practice.

For the right individual, this position offers the opportunity to:

  • Earn a reliable and competitive salary
  • Develop into a highly capable financial planner and advisor
  • Work directly with an established high-net-worth client base
