Job description

Doug's Underground Service, a MPS Group, Inc. Company is looking for a reliable Fiber Optic Splicing Technician to join our team in Traverse City, MI. This individual will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and splicing of fiber optic cables in various environments. The ideal candidate will have experience with core alignment, single fiber splicing and a strong commitment to safety and quality.
Shift Details:
Shift: 1st Shift
Schedule: Monday- Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Responsibilities and Job Duties:
  • Perform fiber optic cable splicing, including fusion splicing of loose tube and ribbon cables.
  • Install and troubleshoot fiber optic systems in various environments (aerial, underground, and indoor).
  • Test and activate fiber optic systems and troubleshoot network issues.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of daily work, including production tracking and blueprint updates.
  • Install fiber optic enclosures, electronics, and related equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on network transport and power equipment.
  • Operate technical equipment, such as OTDR, fusion splicing equipment, and power meters.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and company procedures during all work activities.
  • Perform routine construction work, such as fiber locates, pulling cables, climbing ladders, and digging as needed.
  • Communicate professionally with co-workers, customers, and homeowners.

Requirements and Qualifications:
  • Minimum of two years of experience in fiber optic splicing.
  • Proficient in using splicing equipment such as fusion splicers, OTDR, and optical power meters.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Strong knowledge of fiber optic schematics, design maps, and basic electronic designs.
  • Ability to perform fiber optic splicing tasks that require accurate identification of color-coded fibers.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to lift, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to lift to 80 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and operate tools for extended periods.
  • Flexibility to work in various weather conditions and environments, in both outdoor and indoor environments, including confined spaces.
  • Required to comply with all company safety protocols and industry standards.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • (CDL Class "A" preferred).
