This Opportunity

We are looking to expand our Regulated Materials Assessment and Industrial Hygiene services by adding an Environmental Scientist / Asbestos Professional to our team. In this role, you will work on-site at client and project facilities performing asbestos, lead, and other regulated material sampling, abatement oversight, air monitoring, and air sample analysis. You will assess the condition of building materials, quantify regulated substances, and serve as a field supervisor for asbestos abatement projects, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and client requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct pre-demolition/renovation building surveys.

On-site monitoring including, but not limited to, asbestos, indoor air quality, lead, mold, HVAC, and various OSHA compliance following regulatory requirements and project specific documents/work plans.

Perform appropriate monitoring including necessary calibration and data collection.

Interpret results and respond appropriately.

Perform project oversight/supervision.

Maintain equipment provided to complete tasks including PPE, computer, other assigned equipment in addition to shared equipment and supplies.

Acquire and maintain certifications.

Abide by company health and safety requirements and site-specific provisions.

Follow QA/QC requirements.

Develop summaries, generate photographic logs, and input field work documentation. Attention to detail is critical.

Use technical writing and analysis skills to prepare project documentation and assist with preparation of final client deliverables under direction of a Project Manager.

Interact with building owners and contractors to coordinate field activities and provide direction when necessary.

May become Team Leader including mentoring and training entry-level staff.

Conduct field work as requested, to include out-of-town travel for up to two weeks at a time, multiple times a year.

Read/understand SOPs and train on specific field tasks.

Accurately and efficiently conduct environmental sampling in accordance with the project scope of work.

Oversee the proper removal and management of regulated materials or contaminated soil excavation during remediation and construction projects.

Organize, digitize and file field notes in Document Locator in a timely manner.

Utilize and maintain field equipment in accordance with Bay West SOPs.

Help resolve problems as they arise in the field.

Manage schedule and relationships to maintain utilization goals and complete activities within promised time frames.

Minimum Education Required

High school diploma or GED.

Minimum Experience Required

Required Qualifications

3 to 5 years of experience in Environmental role

MDH certified asbestos inspector

MDH certified asbestos site supervisor

MDH 2-Day asbestos air sampling certificate of completion

Must be comfortable and able to work while wearing Level C Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which includes a full-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) along with Tyvek and Saranex suits.

Valid driver's license.

Occasionally the position may require working evenings, weekends and extended out of town working assignments.

High school diploma or GED.

Able to obtain site access to secure areas such as Federal or State sites

Ability to read and understand maps, schematic drawings, diagrams, and instruction manuals

Proficiency using Word and Excel applications

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science or Related

One to two years of experience conducting regulated material surveys and/or air monitoring

40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER Certification and/or up to date on 8-hour refresher

Completed NIOSH 582 equivalency course training

Physical Requirements

Ability to function in work environments that sometimes include high heat; high humidity; extreme cold; roadway traffic hazards; on water (boat operations) and confined spaces

Must be comfortable wearing a full-face respirator for extended periods of time

Adequate vision and hearing to safely see teammates hand signals and hear warning communication in low light

Substantial repetitive movements of the wrists, hands and/or fingers (including reaching, grasping, twisting, pushing, and pulling)

Walking on uneven surfaces & climbing stairs/ladders

Semi-frequent crouching, bending, stooping and twisting, occasionally in tight spaces

Sitting in a vehicle for up to three hours straight

Working while standing during a 12-hour workday

Frequently lifting up to 10 lbs. over an 8-hour period and occasionally up to 50 lbs. over a four-hour period

Occasionally lifting 3-6" diameter hoses that weigh approximately 20 pounds over the head onto hose racks

Managing a 55-gallon drum containing approximately 400 pounds of material onto a drum dolly, then moving the drum using the dolly
